Here is the story on the Backpacker website. Sam told me about his epic descent from Iron Mountain, which is mentioned in the article. I suspect he stayed overnight at or near Widman Ranch.

I don't know. I didn't think to get details at the time. And his journal entry isn't specific. I kind of assume he went along the canyon floor and encountered the ranch either when it was abandoned or the caretaker was sleeping.
