Yeah, I noticed the surge in BBQ citations. I figured it would be EF not WF though, with those folks who, uh, "camp", before EF Road hits Glendora MR.

Hidden canyon revealed
http://www.dailybulletin.com/ci_9811695 ... st_emailed

"Almost a century ago, Charles Frankish, one of Ontario's key developers, published a book of photos that included a picture of a dirt road into that canyon. The caption of the photo urged visitors not to miss visiting the special place that was Stoddard Canyon.....Cabins were also available for a longer stay. It was once known as the "Niagara Falls of California," because so many newlyweds would stay there and hike up the canyon to the falls. "

"One night just after Christmas 1953, a Santa Ana wind-fed wildfire reduced the lush canyon and its buildings to a few stone fireplaces and ashes...A number of fires, the most recent being the Grand Prix fire of October 2003, have charred the canyon.

Drug users and graffiti artists obviously also have spent time in the canyon"

Mountain rescuers believe in service
http://www.dailybulletin.com/ci_9732507?source=rss

"All except Estrada and Smail are volunteers. The team reserve deputies are paid $1 a year to go into the mountains, canyons and trails to find lost, injured, stranded and trapped hikers, rock climbers and weekend warriors often ill-equipped and unprepared to cope with the dangers in the mountains"

"There are as many different answers as there are people to ask," Buhite continued. "Some will say because it's fun and exciting. Most will say altruism. We all sacrifice time away from our families and regard our families as the unsung heroes in all this. But when we get right down to it, the answer is fairly simple. It most frequently has to do with how we were raised and the examples our parents set for us about helping others."

According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, witnesses saw Valladares plunge into the water, rise to the surface and then go under again. He did not resurface.......

Malibu Creek meanders through the park for 25 miles"

ARCADIA - Angeles National Forest officials have announced the selection of Marty Dumpis as the new deputy forest supervisor.
Dumpis previously was the recreation and land staff officer for the forest. From 2001 to 2007, he was the district ranger for the San Gabriel River Ranger District.

Incidents: continued level of parking citations, graffiti, trash, collisions, etc etc..and of course those BBQs...only deal was overflow at Switzers parking last weekend...so Switzers plan to get there early and no chance of escaping parking citation or campfires.

The dog that the cougar took out was a 65lbs shepard mix. That's good sized dog. Well, I guess if they can take down an adult man, they can take down a dog. Still, I would have thought a dog of that size could hold his own.

This is messed up. Now I have to finish before 20 hours? smt. Looks like I'll have to put a bike there and park down at the bottom of the hill. Or walk 57 miles instead of 53. :(

Both ranges are in Riverside County but still part of the San Bernardino National Forest. "

Another reason for me to stay on the trail. These guys had guns. Imagine walking off trail and into their camp.
This crap and the car break ins. Such lovely things to think about while trying to enjoy the forests. What a joke!

Lying on the nice rock next to a clear pretty incised pool was a piece of defecation wrapped in toilet paper...to say I was surprised that someone made it to this place is an understatement. We had no choice but to continue but not too long thereafter we encountered a brand spanking new hose, over 1000ft long, continuous. Hard to complain because at least now there was a well-designed trail dug out of poision oak and it all made sense now , except how heavy that hose must have been to carry this far...how does someone acquire such a hose?

"Cyclist Eludes Lunging Mountain Lion In Glendora"
http://www.knbc.com/news/17325427/detai ... a&psp=news

GLENDORA, Calif. -- California Fish & Game officials sent out an alert this week, warning hikers and cyclists in Glendora about a mountain lion that tried to attack a man riding a bike earlier this week.

The cyclist was near mile marker 9.3, according to the department's alert, when the mountain lion charged down an embankment. The animal missed the cyclist, who sped away unharmed.

Glendora Mountain Road will be closed to traffic for the Labor Day weekend, but hikers and cyclists may still use the road. Mountain lion warning signs have been posted along popular trails.

Now really, does anybody think that a bicyclist could outrun a mountain lion?
My take on the whole story is that the mountain lion & the bicyclist just happened to be passing the same spot at the same time. The lion was probably running down the embankment and didn't realize that a cyclist was coming down the road.
If the mountain lion wanted to eat the cyclist, he would have.

I can see that happening. A friend of mine live in Glendora and sees them often. I can totally see a bike and a lion not seeing each other. Not likely but IT COULD HAPPEN 8) :?
