At lunch, I went and looked at my Harrison Angeles High Country Map. Harrison's map shows exactly the route you took. BTW, the route you took makes way more sense than what the USGS topo shows.
Old road grade? I do remember vaguely that there were some old road grades, but my memory stops there. So, there's an old road grade below the little saddle? Interesting. I wonder if that old road grade is what the USGS topo shows as the trail. If the old road grade is what the USGS topo is showing as the trail, that would explain why the route shown on the USGS topo is so roundabout. It would be pretty tough to route a road down from the little saddle.
