Angeles Crest Highway closed indefinitely because of fire
September 4, 2009 | 1:25 pm

More than 40 miles of the Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada Flintridge to Islip Saddle have been closed indefinitely because of the Station Fire, which has burned off road stripping and destroyed guard rails and signage along the scenic route, Caltrans officials said.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2 ... -fire.html

I suppose this means that the eastern part of the highway will be open after the Station Fire is under control, but that the part up to Mt. Islip will remain closed indefinitely.

There's a certain irony to this: for all this time the road has been open only to Islip Saddle and points east were closed. Now, the road to Islip will be closed and points east will be open. Image

The definition of indefinitely does mean FOREVER, right?

I do believe this makes zero sense, if that's the case.

Indefinite: Not definite, especially:
a. Unclear; vague.
b. Lacking precise limits: an indefinite leave of absence.
c. Uncertain; undecided: indefinite about their plans.

Imagine if you could only get to VIncent Gap...then we'd really be cryin'.

I saw some pics today - all the guardrails are just lying on the ground. Note to self: maybe metal posts are a good idea for guardrails.

Excellent, thanks AlanK.

Sounded like one of those outrageous news headlines, is all.

And yes, steel typically doesn't melt much during wildfires. :)

The government has been looking for reasons to spend money on projects to help save jobs and stop the bleeding economy. This will be a perfect project to spend gov. money. Besides 1% of L.A. is more people than most places in U.S.

Yes, but the 'open' section will be closed during the November-May right?
They also need to get more informative about the other roads like AFH & Tujunga roads....because if the past is any indication, those will be closed forever too.

The Caltrans listing has changed. I also noticed the Mt Wilson website had mentioned they hoped the road would be open soon, so visitors could resume activities at the observatory.

Anyone live close enough to go see if the gate is open?

Chuck Norris doesn't hike the Angeles. He stands in one spot and demands the mountain move beneath him.

just a little update, we have sent about 500 yards of concrete up there. I am loading 6 trucks now and they seem to be working hard up there. I heard one of the construction guys had a rattler bite him.

Thanks yobtaf. That's interesting stuff. I just called CalTrans today - got a very nice, very patient guy who told me they were 'getting a lot of calls' about when the road would open...He didn't have a firm date, though. Sometime in the next few weeks...

He also said the forest service is not in a hurry for it to open, of course, because it will make keeping people out of the forest a bit difficult.

Hope so. I can understand not wanting people in the forest right now - how about a "secret" re-opening, where they only tell nature geeks like us? I don't mean to be elitist, but wouldn't it be nice if the only folks up there were the "leave no trace" behind type?

I'm looking for any recent information regarding the status of the ACH between Wrightwood and Islip Saddle. Heading west from Wrightwood, how far can you get on the ACH?

- thanks

Not looking good for getting up through La Canada for awhile, either. Thought it would be mid-November, but now the mid-November date is just to get up to Angeles Forest Hwy. (This is all from Mt Waterman's facebook page.)
