2298 on the USGS, 2297 on OSM.

Just a quickie this morning on Rocky Peak to get some exercise in before it got blazing hot. Started at 6:30am from Corriganville Park. I selected this route from my dank stash since you do the gain right away from the start, and it's on a west-facing slope. With a projected high of 98º This paid off in a big way.

First, props to whoever decided to build this wildlife/recreation tunnel under the 118 freeway. In October when I was here with the family we saw a Bobcat come out of it!

The gain up Rocky Peak through the heart of the Chatsworth formation got me sweating immediately. I knew I had to get to the top before that sun broke over the crest otherwise this would get miserable fast. I could see the glow taunting me over the Laurel Sumac and Turbidite Sandstone.

After a little more than an hour I reached the Rocky Peak upland, and walked into that angry July sun. But I made it up the 1500 feet of gain to get there completely in the shade! Point for me!

I was along the exceedingly popular Rocky Peak Road for just a few yards, but still saw plenty of people.

But I wasn't heading to the summit of Rocky Peak today, I was after 2298, and it was nearly within my grasp. Navigating a maze of mountain bike use trails that were generally in good shape, I was briefly on a couple that weren't, being closer to the level of game trail, or at least "neglected use trail."

2298 had a nice stack of Chatsworth formation boulders on it, and commanding views of the Simi Valley.

I could also get a good view of the Simi Hills across the Santa Susanna Pass, and could think back fondly to Mt Rexmore viewtopic.php?p=68623&hilit=Rexmore#p68623 and Fishback Ridge. viewtopic.php?p=71171&hilit=Fishback+Ridge#p71171.

I was back to the car by 9AM and got me a smoothie on the way home before the temperatures got above 90. Props to whoever mapped the tangle of use trails in Rocky Peak Park - its all done very accurately, and made navigation easy when it could readily have not been.

4.17 miles, 1570 of gain.
