I hiked Sunset Peak on Sun Feb 15, 2026 via the ridge. I'd never been there before and I was pleasantly surprised to see some rocks just before the summit. Apparently the trail used to go around them but that part washed out. The rocks weren't difficult to get up and around, aside from lots of Poodle Dog Bush. Avoiding that required careful foot and trekking pole placement.
There was more PDB on the fire road that we took back but it was easier to avoid.
Due to a locked gate and warning signs, getting to Lookout Mtn from that side didn't seem viable. The alternative is to park in Baldy Village but I decided against that.
Note that the road to the trailhead is blocked off due to construction so you'll have to park on Mt Baldy Rd and walk up.
Pics chez moi.

I did Lookout Mtn from Cow Saddle and just sneaked in behind the gate with some friends. There is an opening by the rocks. I think the gates are just to scare people. No one was actually on the property. I believe the trail is part of the Angeles National Forest so they really can't stop anyone from hiking the trail.

Is the trail to Lookout Mountain from Cow Canyon saddle still there? We were on the road up to Sunset Peak a few weeks ago, and I couldn't see it at all. What I could see is that the old RV park property has burned. But it's still full of people shooting guns: it sounded like a full-on firing range over there. Jumping that gate is still a super-early-morning activity.
