I've been looking forward to a snow hike and finally had the opportunity to do so. I invited Jeff to check out Ice House Canyon with the possibility of hiking to Timber Mountain.
To our surprise there wasn't any snow at the start of the trail. However, it was a nice walk. The creek was flowing nicely with lots of small waterfalls and cascades to view along the way.
The weather was perfect, nice and cool. No need for gloves. Although I did overdresss expecting it ti be really cold. I wore three layers of shirts and 2 layers of pants. In addition I brought 3 pairs of gloves, hand warmers, 2 beanies, and a pair of gaiters. Definitely no need for all that.
Anyways, after the Cucamonga wilderness a few patches of snow coukd be seen.
Snow on the trail started to appear about a mile and a half before the saddle. Microspikes were needed beyond this point. I walked as far as I could in the snow and finally donned my microspikes just a few feet after the last sign that reads .6 to the saddle.
Jeff was patiently waiting for me at the saddle and had hot chocolate ready for me. It was really cold and a bit windy. There was so much snow. It was like a winter wonderland. I was so excited to finally be in the presence of snow.
After a nice break we decided to turn around. We met a few people who were trying to summit Cucomonga peak but it was way too dangerous without crampons and an ice axe. Although, we did meet one guy who was successful with his summit and was well prepared.
I also bumped into two friends along the way.
Overall, a beautiful first snow hike for 2025.
By the way, Jeff and I both scored by finding some cool stuff that will be posted in the Now It's mine section.
