The Jim Spencer Trail was built a few years ago by the Restoration Legacy Crew. It honors a beloved trail boss who founded the Scenic Mt. Lowe volunteer group. Spencer died in 2005. The half-mile path serves as a direct connector between Mt. Lowe Camp and the Tom Sloan Trail.

The trail was constructed with the utmost care. We tried to follow an old USFS connector, but that trail had mostly disappeared. So basically this is a new trail. All the rock work is new, and there's a lot of it, necessary for the crossing of Alpine Canyon. The Forty-Step Staircase might be the biggest of its kind in the Gabes.

I checked on this trail yesterday. It's doing well, apart from being a little overgrown.
