I don't like to see it but unfortunately it probably has to happen. Too many idiots flooding the forests and causing fires and trashing the place. Resources are stretched thin and things could get really bad if another big fire starts.

I hate to say it but CA needs to rethink its forest management. I just don't see how the current status quo can be maintained.

This sort of 'management' makes me want to violate the closure so fucking hard, but I probably won't. I'm probably a little bitch.

I'll make sure my bike doesn't shoot sparks. Maybe I'll make a social media post about how I'm helping by not going out or something.

Limit me harder, daddy.

California? Hehehe.....This is a federal order. Its the whole USA. Approved by DC.
Why California...shut it all down...I mean if its "not taken lightly". You telling me CA forests are only affected by "climate change"?

My bet is that the closure will be extended as we're entering prime fire season and there will be no significant precipitation for the next two and half months. Once they've closed and summer is over there will be very little incentive to reopen, just stay closed until the danger has passed. The saddest part of all this is the forest service is admitting, we can't manage this anymore and the only answer is to close up shop.

I should've said: federal, state, and local governments need to rethink their strategies.

I don't care who's making the decision: the current situation is not sustainable. We won't have much forest left in a few years if things stay the same (or get worse). Something has to change.

Climate change plays a role but the majority of the fires are started by humans. The climate just makes it worse. We have to address the other factors. Downed power lines, overcrowding, lack of personnel, lack of wildland education, etc.

I was planning to go backpacking up Shadow Creek since a few permits opened up last week. Now all I can do is go visit Potato Mountain? Is Stoddard Peak outside the NF?

FYI, the National Parks are still open. It's the NFs that are shut. Look into doing that, maybe?

Was going to take a buddy on his first backpacking trip last year in the Sierras. That got canceled due to smoke. Redo of the trip was next weekend.... already gave him the bad news.

2nd year in the row that the deer hunt has been disrupted too. But I'm sure the State of California will do the right thing and refund deer tags fees (said with dripping sarcasm).

They ended most of the closures early, but ANF and SBNF are still closed, presumably to reopen on the 17th.

ANF posted on twatter that it'll open on the 22nd. Hopefully they extend it forever and ever and ever and ever. Maybe someone can run me over repeatedly with a bus as well. At least newsome is still the governor. Gotta look at the silver lining, you know.

Both ANF and SBNF are supposed to reopen at midnight Sep. 22, which I guess means they actually open Sep. 23:

Not understanding them opening....according to them, they dont have any workers...in the field....for months. They closed campgrounds just before the closure. Truly pathetic.

What about fire fighters? Seems they are exempt. Actually its a question of how exempt these contractors are. Why is there one group thats says its too risky to interact with any person or outdoors....and then you have NPS and firefighters working? Seems to me, the whole deal should be called off....and the outdoors is a contaminated area. Where its even dangerous to wear 2 masks and be vaccinated.

I bet whoever theyll extend it until oct 1. The prize for winning the bet is more bitching from me.

The ANF doesnt have enough workers to do shit anyway, which always sorta blew me away. Were next to one of the biggest collections of clothed apes on the planet and the fucking trash cans are overflowing cause they cant pay enough dudes to work here or whatever. Bruh, gimme a place to stay near Crystal Lake with basic utilities and a work truck and ill clean shit up. Ive done worse for years.

How do we not have the firefighting capability? I totally understand the argument that our assets are tied up in the north but damn, we dont have more? I know fuck all about firefighting but could we divert funding from somewhere and put it towards making our fire fighting capability the envy of the world, or maybe just the western US? Guess that would have to be federal budget and not state. I say this knowing so much about finances, obviously. I dunno man, im just frustrated. I despise having the state tell me i cant do/own shit, banning things and travel etc, and it also feels like its newrly inevitable that everything i love will burn down outside of this dirty crowded megalopolis that seems uncaring.

People should at least not be fined/punished for hiking or riding bikes or whatever. I get having fire restrictions, but banning anything tends to be stupid, and i dont need the state to be my parental figure, cause they tend to make shitty decisions. Anyway, im done bitching for now. Im real sick of this shit. Please dont use the word safety near me.

Also pretty pissed about Adam up at his Crystal Lake Cafe. Man’s so generous and the state closes the road so much. Hes working his ass off and his family helps him run the joint but you cant keep the lihts on if you cant have customers. Its been closed for this long, and now even longer. Bankers got bailouts in 08 but what about people like Adam? Hes got no choice in the matter.

It does appear that the ANF is mismanaged. But it's also true that dumbass humans will burn it down and destroy it in other ways if something doesn't change. I'm not sure what should be done, but something has to be done! More resources seems like a good start. Firefighters, rangers, etc. The amount of knuckleheads in the forest these days is astounding.

Gonna need more power in that Subaru 360 bruh. Whats it got, 36hp? Wild ass guess. Could get it sideways near Manker Flat in January for sure.

I used to get mad at old dudes who hoped the closed section of 39 would never open. Now i get it. Now i wish it was harder for regular people to get into the mtns. Now im that old guy. Cyclists and people walking in should get a free pass, just take my dont-burn-shit-down test. E-bikers get a free pass but are then humiliated by my Shame Police and forced to go home and sell their ebikes and buy real bikes.

Vote for me for supreme chancellor of Chalupastan. Witness my generosity and feel my judgement.

I would think our brand is in the dumpster.
It is frustrating for sure cause the record doesnt reflect the effort.
Last year, the Aussies helped us for the Bobcat fire..which was a touche moment.
The aussies would say, you said what about our firefighting again...oh thats right you called us savages...and third world.

No doubt there are some big holes in our approach. One Ive read constantly about is our reliance of prisoners..re: pay. Too many 'generals' is another. Why cant we fight fire in a "wilderness". The usual mismanged fs. But the fact remains that everything is burnt. So I dont think there is envy...more like feel sorry for.

There's a lot to praise and little to criticize about the firefighting efforts in California over the last few years. They saved Idyllwild, Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks, and South Lake Tahoe, all of which is impressive as hell. An area like the western part of the San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail is a different story. Obviously when you have an uninhabited area of rugged mountains, not served by roads, and with no source of water, there's just not much you can do. Fire trucks don't fly or manufacture their own water.

Preventing careless people from starting more fires was only one of the announced rationales for the closure. Another important one was to keep people from getting trapped by fires. Search and rescue work is dangerous and physically taxing, and it's mostly done by volunteers. It's not fair to ask those people to rescue hikers who blundered into an area where there was a fire.

One of the many ugly pathologies of the post-9/11 era is people's exaggerated sense of their own importance and personal freedom, and the atrophying of their civic duty. My grandparents and my wife's grandparents killed fascists and did Rosie the Riveter jobs. Now people aren't even willing to wear a mask in the supermarket, refrain from hiking for a couple of weeks, or take the trouble to inform themselves about the world by seeking out and reading reliable print journalism.

Oh...missed that. Its closed because of SAR. Just put that first then.
So an official statement from sar...incorporated in fs release? So if I ask for proof, im sure you arent speaking out of your mouth....huge news. Hard to believe all SARs went to simps in such a short time. Of course, if there is no official statement calling for closure from SAR, then.....hehe....and you are using the name of sar for some excuse...but again it might be official from SAR. Its not fs, its really from SAR eh?

I better not find out its not from SAR....because you can take your print "cnn" garbage to hell, and will be a spreader of fake news. But I never say never...the link again from some official SAR website?

The rest of it is no problem. I'll lodge my issue with your 'reliable' print journals you understand....You admit tp not having an opinion..and thankfully there are the
'establishment political experts' for you. Strangely, you dont mention the talking heads..they are too embarrassing?

Should open tomorrow night.

With regards to post 9/11 stuff, I think there's a fine line between following the rules put down by the governing body and going against those rules. One likely wouldn't know if either way was the 'right' way until long after. I do not agree with these blanket closures and bans. Simple rocket physics dictates I can't start a fire with my bike and thus I should not be barred from riding in the mountains.

Masks were said to be unnecessary before they were then suddenly said to be very important by Fauci. Moves like that erode regular people's confidence in the state's decision making, and they often don't respect the rules, even if they follow them. I have some friends who disagree with mandatory masking and related issues, and more who are vehemently against those who are anti-mask or whatever. I find those who don't like the mandates to be more deeply-thinking individuals than the others. One point a buddy of mine brought up that I agree with is that people are told to do something and they blindly follow without questioning. You can't question it in a social setting cause "you're not a doctor!". Well, neither are you, nor most of those asshats talking on TV, but you still follow them. It's the blind obedience that bothers some of us. That helped create the Nazis that those who came before us killed. I'm all for slotting fascists until the end of time, but you gotta make sure your trajectory is not to become the fascist or their subject. Those assholes were doing the right thing and going along with the crowd, in their minds at least. Might seem silly to some, but these things happen in little steps, and one will find themselves looking at a huge burning pile wondering how it got so bad. The 20th century was full of that, regimes doing this and that and millions dying here and there.

Vaccines helped us survive much more devastating pandemics in the past. However, one must wonder how safe something is that's been rolled out so quickly with no time to truly understand its' effect, especially nowadays with how hugely powerful pharmaceutical companies are. I find it a tad annoying that I must still wear a mask all day long at work despite having been vaccinated, due to there being a delta variant. It seems as if there can be endless variants and we will never just let nature take its course and maybe let those who would die, die. Who would support such a move anyway? I personally wouldn't have survived childhood through my late teens without serious medical help, as I have a relatively rare autoimmune and heart disease. I should not by all accounts be alive, yet here I am, bullshitting in the face of god, a god that has had countless opportunities to kill me but has for some cruel comedic reason lifted his gaze from my silly existence. Anyway, my point is maybe people should get out, lose weight, take care of themselves, or perhaps realize they could die. Survival of the fittest. Remember that? Old folks and fat people seem to die from it more.

My health and my freedom are of utmost importance to me. Spending time in the mountains means an enormous amount to me. I require it to maintain a functioning and healthy mental state. I don't care if others disagree. I require no humans' respect nor permission to exist as I see fit, for I am truly free in my consciousness as a wild ape on this planet. I hope I am not misinterpreting your statement, and I have no bones to pick with you or your views, but I have thought of this response for several days and feel I had this to add.

Anywho, I'm done ranting about our current virus. Everybody go outside and don't light off fireworks, pick up your trash, don't get fat, turn off the TV (then crush with hammer), make yourself harder to kill, let everyone know you love em, etc.

Sincerely,
Some ranting asshole who doesn't matter

Following up, I got the reason and it is *new*. The incident name is mammoth pools and #creekfire.
Almost all media on this is retarded, as would be expected, but there were 500-1000 people sitting around one day. The sky started off smoky and ash was in the air soon enough . So 350 people couldnt exit...yeah. It was labor day, and they were at a lake. If they were leaving, there would be a in person visit to evacuate or a text...an escort. I think of this as crystal lake ...just bigger.

It seems that there was no coordinated SAR. CA national guard was the one on scene. Saying there was "7 GPS coordinates" to deal with. In other words the screen lit up really bright with calls for a ride, so it went straight to CA guard. The guard got medals from Donald Trump.

Why cant the FS just close roads in the first place? Then even a moron could survive. But I could see giving up. Thats the point of nanny state..it wants outdoors to be like indoors. And then say see, told ya so, they are just total hapless tiktoks. The cars were fine too. They picked them up later.
