Sign on the 210 this morning announced CA-39 closed in Azusa Canyon due to mudslide.

Was cleaned up and open by December 2. There are electronic signs up that state there will be road work until sometime in January. Can’t recall the exact date.

Road closure misinformation so annoying

Caltrans road conditions conditions search had nothing for the 39 this morning, nor was there anything shown on their QuickMap. Sign at the bottom of the canyon said "Open to Crystal Lake.". Yet at the Valley of the Moon it was closed at about 11:30 with 2 officers leaning on the gate saying might open in an hour and a half. So frustrated again at their chronic inability to communicate current conditions ?

Yeah, roads are sketchy with changing winter weather conditions. Many dirt roads also close after rain. I sometimes plan backup hikes if I am unsure about the road to my main hike, but mostly I'm too lazy to do that.

LOL, we have been up Smith (years ago, in the rain), but we weren't really outfitted for it today. We drove home and had hot chocolate on the deck while viewing the snow on the mountains.

Good news, contractors are repaving the 39. I guess it's chipseal. Chipseal is the cheap shit that sounds like gravel and rides like dogshit, right?
