Two weeks ago, my crazy Wednesday hiking group and I drove to Geyserville and stayed there for a week. The reason for the long drive was to float on the Russian River in Guerneville. The Russian River is named after Russian Ivan Kuskov of the Russian-American Company, who explored the river in the early 19th century and established the Fort Ross colony. The Russian River is 110 miles long and we only did part of it.
We purchased these cool inner tubes. They were fully equipped with a cooler, backrest, cup holders and extra storage. We were the coolest and only group on the river.
Floating down the river during the week to avoid the weekend crowds is best. We did see a few kayaks pass by, but for the most part we had the river all to ourselves.
We took a lunch break on a small beach along the river, and I found this cool hammock to rest on.
As you can see I was very relaxed.
A few days before exploring the river we visited a winery, Fort Ross, and did some short hikes. Here are just a few pics of the adventure.

We also visited Fort Ross where the Russians use to live and battle against the enemy.
There was a church among other buildings with storage for supplies and other things.
There were two Blockhouses located in the fort with cannons inside beneath the windows ready to be fired.
Another cool view of the coast.
We also visited Armstrong Redwoods State National Preserve.

Jeff. the water was not moving very fast. In some areas, there was very little current flowing. Some of the locals recommended paddles and it's a good thing we bought them. We floated from Steelhead beach to Sunset beach which is a 5-minute drive by car. We traveled a little over 2 miles but it took us 4 hours on the tubes. We knew it was going to be slow that is why we packed lunch and other goodies. We also took water guns and had our usual water fights to keep us cool.
