Rescues, fires, weather, roads, trails, water, etc.

A biker on Ken Burton today told me a plane went down and they are looking for it. There was a lot of police with their sirens on up on the Angeles Crest Highway. There were Sheriffs up at the Ken Burton junction looking around using what looked like some weird radar equipment i'm not kidding.

It could be radio direction finding equipment. EPIRB's (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) are typical equipment on planes. They transmit a distress notification typically at 406 MHz and a secondary signal at 121.5 MHz. The 406 MHz signal normally includes the lat/lon of the beacon. The 121.5 signal is used as a homing beacon when the search party gets into the general area.
