I did the alternate route starting on Clamshell Truck Trail, then up the firebreak. I underestimated the effort and water required for this hike. 2450' gain in the last two miles. Trail degenerates to animal trails about half way, went a little ways down the wrong ridge on the way back and ran out of water. Tough little peak. Full report:

Up and OMG UP
Pink metal marker after the first steep section, no benchmark, no signs
Upper trail
Clamshell Peak guarded by yucca
Concrete bunker protecting the register
... and 6 plastic bags

Bear scat? Looks too big for any other animal
Clamshell Peak
They were not visible. I walked right by them. Kinda creepy, right?
I think they might be the A's in this map from the Twin Peaks TV show:

The black lodge must be close to Clamshell Peak.
