Dude, I so wish my dad could hike with me. He's 86. He was 43 when I was born. I think its fantastic to hear about this guy and his "young" age! Hope to see him around staying in shape and enjoying life.

Well, at least I know where I'll be hiking on June 14.

Something tells me (Hiker Name) Don Viejo might be an interesting cat to meet.

Wasn't there some old dude about 85 that got lost coming back from Baden Powell a couple of months ago and had to be rescued?

YES! That has to be the same guy. Didn't even cross my mind.
As a matter of fact, he was up on Baden Powell.
Now I wonder why his kids don't want him hiking alone.
That guy is a stud.
:)

An 85-year-old hiker spent Saturday night shivering on the side of Mt. Baden-Powell, but a sheriff's search and rescue team found him alive the next morning and loaded him into a helicopter for treatment of mild hypothermia.

Donald Buchanan of Temple City was found about 10:30 a.m. off a trail near Mt. Baden-Powell, said Deputy J. Ames of the sheriff's Palmdale station.

On Saturday morning, Buchanan had gone on a day hike in the Vincent Gap area, near Wrightwood, said Lt. Darren Harris of the Palmdale Sheriff's Station.

"When he didn't return home, his son drove to the area and found his father's car still parked at the trailhead" late Saturday, Harris said.

Although nighttime temperatures in the area were in the mid-40s, Buchanan was an experienced hiker who carried a backpack with survival gear.

"He was found at 10:30 a.m. He was pulled out about 10:40 a.m.," Ames said, and transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

If anyone is planning to head up there to meet the man next Saturday, the switchback trail from Vincent Gap was snow-free and in great shape yesterday (more than could be said for me...)...

No, I'm not the guy, either...
