I knew that I was going to get up at 0400 and go hike somewhere in the San Gabriels on Saturday; I just couldn't decide where this was going to be. Late Friday night it dawned on me to go see if I could find the camera that I lost when descending the middle section of Little Rock Creek with Turtle on 8 September last year. Since this wouldn't be quite enough mileage, I figured I'd tack on some PCT to fill out the day. I also fancied ascending the Squaw Canyon streambed, picking up PCT at the saddle between Winston Ridge and Winston Peak. I knew I could divert up Winston Ridge if Squaw didn't pan out.

I parked the Jeep at the Sulphur Springs gate at 0555 and headed off down 5N04. Three of the things I love about this area are the big open spaces, dearth of visitors and beautiful views. I reached the spot where Turtle and I exited Little Rock Creek, and headed up-canyon for a bit less than a mile before deciding that the search would likely be unproductive. This stretch of LCR that was bone-dry in September, was a beautifully flowing stream on Saturday. The hike was mostly gentle boulder hopping in a weak attempt to keep the feet dry.

I next headed back up 5N04, dropping in and crossing Little Rock Creek near the junction of Winston Ridge and Squaw Canyon. I tried to stay in the rocky streambed, but gave up when I reached a tree-choked stretch that drove me high up one of Winston's STEEP buttresses. As I got high enough to see over the impediment, it became clear that I could have proceeded up Squaw fairly easily, although the view through to the Winston saddle was obstructed. Too much uncertainty to risk resuming that path. I continued the miserably steep and loose climb up to the western end of Winston Ridge.

Once atop Winston Ridge, it was a fairly simple matter of steering between the Poodle Dog bushes, then following the path to join the Pacific Crest Trail. The five segments between here and the car took me past Cloudburst Summit, Camp Glenwood, Three Points, then Sulphur Springs.

I've seen folks working on Glenwood recently. I think they have a ways to go.

Thanks for great trip report and photos. I really want to get into the back range, but it is long trek from the OC. No good way to get back there. I have to go a long ways around one side or the other.

Thanks for the TR - especially been wanting to see some Squaw Cyn. pictures.

Do you think it would have been easier to get up to Winston Ridge via the path marked in red...

Hey HikeUp!

I was scoping that route out on my way up. It would be great because it meets the main ridge much closer to the unburned (Station Fire) eastern end. Getting to it requires some ascent/descent of the proceeding buttress in order to bypass the little tree-choked streambed. I was also concerned by the seeming narrowness of some sections of that route. I suppose I'll just have to get back and try it some time.

Really enjoyed the report and pics. I was somewhat nearby on Sunday for a training run. We ran from Islip to Chilao. At 3 pts we hit the PCT until 5N04 (I think) where we climb to near Mt Hilyer. Looking out across the expanse from the PCT to the area you were at made me wonder what it's like. Your report and pics helped. One day I'd like to get out there. I bet it's not traveled to often.
