SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)

I go up there to climb at the crag right above the lot. I haven't seen any broken glass or signs of break-inns. I'm always within throwing distance of my car, though. I'd say it's OK.

One caveat:

Because Lake Road may not be getting plowed and because there is around 15 inches of snow in some areas (and more expected) it is not known whether there is any access to the campgrounds.

-Jim-Ya. Im having my jaw fixed on April 6th. 4+ hours of surgery,
so ima b recovering anywhere from 2-4 weeks. So im guessin the snow mite b pretty gone by then.

We didn't need chains, nothing special was required on the bike, and it was fun downhill. 25 miles of downhill, I think?

AW is about 982734967326% right with his comment. I'm very VERY happy that this place is open again, as there's a lot to do in the area and it's literally up my street, but there will likely be a lot of trash, graffiti, and craaaaaaaaaaaap everywhere by the end of the summer. C'est la vie, though.

How far of a walk/ride is it from the new closure location to Islip Saddle via the road? (and yes, I'm too lazy to get a map out and figure it out myself)

Hikeup, the gate that effectively marks the end of all vehicular northern traffic on R39 to the gate at Islip Saddle is 4.45 miles. The gate that's currently locked is 1.45 miles south of that. I'm not sure why it's not open to the furthest gate, as that section of road is in good condition.

About 4.5 miles - it's pretty awesome actually, if you zoom in close enough at the bottom you can tell the difference in road quality at the 1978 closure.

Then they should give up ownership of it....which they wont. Its going to continue being a money pit and opportunity to cite people for walking on it.
