I go up there to climb at the crag right above the lot. I haven't seen any broken glass or signs of break-inns. I'm always within throwing distance of my car, though. I'd say it's OK.

Woo hoo!!
One caveat:
One caveat:
HJBecause Lake Road may not be getting plowed and because there is around 15 inches of snow in some areas (and more expected) it is not known whether there is any access to the campgrounds.

Oh why don't I have a RWD car anymore? Sounds like primo drifting conditions.

Schnee!

The end of R39 is now just a little past Crystal Lake.

Snackbar and caretaker's villa

CL Crag

The Lake. It's pretty damn full!

I rode down from the CL area on my bike in the "storm" while my buddy followed in his truck.

We didn't need chains, nothing special was required on the bike, and it was fun downhill. 25 miles of downhill, I think?
AW is about 982734967326% right with his comment. I'm very VERY happy that this place is open again, as there's a lot to do in the area and it's literally up my street, but there will likely be a lot of trash, graffiti, and craaaaaaaaaaaap everywhere by the end of the summer. C'est la vie, though.

Hikeup, the gate that effectively marks the end of all vehicular northern traffic on R39 to the gate at Islip Saddle is 4.45 miles. The gate that's currently locked is 1.45 miles south of that. I'm not sure why it's not open to the furthest gate, as that section of road is in good condition.

About 4.5 miles - it's pretty awesome actually, if you zoom in close enough at the bottom you can tell the difference in road quality at the 1978 closure.

Yes. Always be prepared. I'm gonna bring those little inflatable arm floaty thingies in case I fall into Crystal Lake.

Caltrans is abandoning plans to reopen a 4.4-mile section of state Highway 39 in the Angeles National Forest between Crystal Lake and Wrightwood, citing rising costs, engineering challenges and a mandate to protect bighorn sheep.

Then they should give up ownership of it....which they wont. Its going to continue being a money pit and opportunity to cite people for walking on it.cougarmagic wrote: I may be alone with this reaction, but this is GREAT!!!!! They should never have bothered trying to reopen that road.
