Knock on wood but, I've never ripped too many shifters, brakes and asst'd stuff off the bike to want a SS, 1x9 or Rohloff setup.
Question about a Rohloff would be IF you get a mechanical in the middle of Timbuktu - who's gonna have parts for that piece of German bizness?
I'd keep it simple on a long ride - a 1x9 will get you most places.
