Sheriff's officials say they have found the body of a man who disappeared while hiking in Wildwood Park.

Matt Chidgey, 40, was reported missing by his family Wednesday evening after he apparently went hiking earlier in the day through the park.

Authorities and family members scoured the wet, muddy park through the night and found his body around 8:15 a.m. Friday, according to Det. Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

A family member found Chidgey's body near a creek in the Meadow Cove area of the park, Buschow said.

It's believed he drowned, he added.

Chidgey told his roommates that he planned to take a hike through the park and see waterfalls Wednesday afternoon.

They didn't realize he was missing until later that night, Buschow said.

Family members say Chidgey was an experienced hiker.

A park ranger told the Ventura County Star that the park has been closed since Sunday and is prone to flash flooding when it rains.

The fourth in a series of powerful storms moved into Southern California Wednesday, bringing bouts of torrential downpour and strong winds to the region.
