Hikers find bomb in San Diego

SAN DIEGO—Authorities say a military explosive has been found by a hiker near a San Diego County park.

San Diego Police Officer Brad Ruff says the ordnance was discovered Saturday near Highway 52 north of Mission Trails Regional Park.

Ruff says the hiker used GPS coordinates to direct authorities to the location.

Explosives experts from the adjacent Marine Corps Air Station Miramar were called out to the scene, but a base spokesman didn't have any further information.

The area was used during World War II for live artillery practice and for pilots to drop dud bombs.

Mission Trails Park is about 12 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.

Mission Trails Regional Park is perhaps the most popular hiking area in San Diego County and came into existence after Camp Elliot closed. Discoveries of unexploded ordnance in that area are common.

In OC we have at least the Arroyo Trabuco that was used by Navy/Marine practice. There's a removal process supposedly ongoing; though I haven't seen any evidence of that personally.
They know they won't get it all.
