Carbs or proteins? Hiking `meal` question

Hey guys (and gals, if any).

For a full day hike, what works best? Carbs or proteins? A mix of both?

I am wondering what kind of diet (not sure if it's the right word to use in this context) you would suggest.

Based on my own experience, carbs only go so far. I started adding more protein (hard boiled egg) in my lunch kit and my energy levels are seemingly sustained longer.

Is a mix of carbs+protein+water the way to go year-round? Any advice?

by far the most important thing is carbs....the days before the hike

honestly you could probably eat whatever doesn't give you gastrointestinal issues the day of the hike. a good mix of carbs / protein / fat.

i can get away with not eating anything even on a big hike, but generally make a nice sandwich and maybe a granola bar.

i'll give a longer answer later when i have time, but basically most of your energy comes from glycogen storage. that comes from carbohydrates, and it takes like 12 hrs to fuel up. so if its empty, eating while on the hike won't help, as it takes too long to actually become useful.

Mmm...considering how tough it was for me last time I went to San Gorgonio, loading up on sugar and chocolate sounds like a good idea.

I am gonna make a run to 7/11 for twinkies and m&m reese cups... :wink:
