LA Times disses our mountains

I (or at least my wife) pays good money for the L.A. Times. I think it makes some of the best material for my incontinent dog to use for a restroom!

Dear Ms. Cart:

I read with interest your article, San Gabriel Mountains a daunting place to fight fire. I noted the following:

I wonder, if you truly knew these peaks and valleys, these forests and vales, if you would still say that. Are they the High Sierra? Are they the Rockies? By no means. The San Gabriels don't have the sheer raw grandeur of the Sierra and the Rockies -- but they are lovely in their own right. I would invite you to discover for yourself the sylvan delights, the hidden pockets of cool shade, the greenery, the wild flowers, the pools and falls, the peaks and passes. Would that I could convey to you a perfect photographic rendering of all the beauty of the San Gabriels. Alas, I cannot. But below are links to a handful of photographs of the San Gabriels. I apologize, for these photos were taken by a non-professional with a simple "point and shoot" camera, but perhaps even these, meager though they may be, can impart to you some of the beauty of the place.

The Sierra are four or more hours away and the Rockies farther still. Those far away mountains are for but occasional trips. The San Gabriels are the mountains Angelenos really go to. It is the San Gabriels that provide us a rest and recreation. It is the San Gabriels that people can visit regularly. It is the San Gabriels that rescue children from all urban lives. It is the San Gabriels that put us in touch with nature -- both our own and that of the world around us. The San Gabriels are the priceless jewel of Los Angeles. There is plenty of beauty for those who are willing to look.

Taken for granted? Perhaps they are. Drab and unassuming? By no means.

Interesting. I got a reply from her. She says that she goes with her dog to Eaton Canyon every morning and that she takes the dog to Sturdevant Falls regularly. She says that she thinks the San Gabriels are great.

Not sure why she worded her article the way she did, but I don't think she meant to diss the San Gabriels.
