Mr. Narao Higashiura, 84 years old, accomplished 9,000 days of continuous hikes on June 16th at Mt. Hakui (819 meter) in Matsuzaka City, Mie Prefecture.
In the summer of 1960, Mr. Miura hiked Norikura Dake (3.026 meter) in Japan’s North Alps with his family and was fascinated by the scenery ever since. He wasn’t satisfied with hiking only on weekends and holidays, he decided to hike everyday after he retired. He realized his dream by a hike on October 26, 1984 – a day after he retired from a printing company.
He mainly hiked 300 ~ 500 meter mountains around City of Ise, he achieved 8,000 days in mid September of 2006. He hiked Mt. Fuji 280 days. He became sick, hit by a car on his way home, had sprained ankle, and was seemed to have a break, but he overcame by his commitment and a support of his family.
Mr. Higashiura arrived at the foot of Mt. Hakui at after 7:00 am on 16th, stood on the summit after an hour. His spirit is high and told, “I’d like to take one step at a time firmly. I will continue hiking beyond 10,000 days.”
