Baldy Bowl, 1.11.08
My son and I went up the Bowl on Friday, Jan. 11. Gorgeous day. I was surprised we saw so few other people out there. Saw a couple of skiers coming down the Bowl and one couple at the ski hut who said they had walked up the canyon from the falls. We got to the bottom of the Bowl relatively late (10 am) and so we did a lot of postholing on the way up because of the soft snow. We didn't care; we had a great time. We went up one of the gullies between the rock outcroppings. It was very icy in those gullies where the rock keeps them in the shade.
How strong was the ice in the top? When do you figure would be a primo time to head up there with as little postholing as possible? I had figured on taking my buddy Dustin up the Bowl sometime, preferably very early morning after camping out, or later around sunset.
TDR,
Sorry for not checking the site sooner so I didn't see your message until just now. You've probably already done your thing, but here's my response anyway. The ice was fairly solid the last 60 meters from the ridge near the largest rock outcrop. If you started from the bottom say, at 7 am, I would think you would avoid any postholing.
Let us know if you and your friend went.

Yo, I think Dustin's down for this weekend. Let's do it.
I'm good on the 18-19th, but might be busy on the 19th near Big Bear with a buddy.bertfivesix wrote:Yo, I think Dustin's down for this weekend. Let's do it.
