Re: Getting Lost

I was hiking up Haleakala from Hana once. Late in the day the trail ended in jungle. I bushwhacked for awhile. Then with no discernible trail and finding myself turned around, with dark and a potential storm I bailed. I knew that I should head downhill and off towards a ridge. After about an hour I ...

Re: Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails

Maybe the first thing to do is to eliminate the western braids. The SAR team has had a number of rescues of people ending up in Goode Canyon and missing the ridge altogether on descent. Perhaps that would be the biggest bang for the buck at this point. The route gets such heavy use that I suspect th...

Tekewin, the scree was endless in true life. but the climb definitely was fun. Amazing views, cool exposure, and a little climbed peak.

Mt Peale in the La Sal Mountains

Fleeing six months at home, I headed east with my hiking buddy Pat. One objective was to attempt Mt. Peale in the La Sal Mountains. I had seen it from Moab the year before and it looked enticing. Mt. Peale, at 12,721' is one of the highest mountains in Utah and it is relatively remote. There is some...

Re: 4 x 3 on the San Bernardino Ridge via Momyer

Anthony, the east ridge of Shields is the easy way up. The spine from the west is the most fun, the other ways are a bit sketchy as the rock is loose. Anderson is a walk up a low angle slope, there are several mounds but it is easy to find the true peak. The Anderson Flats has lots of good camping s...

Re: SITTON PEAK

When you go through the saddle just before dropping down to the steep Sitton Peak summit trail there is a use trail on your right. It goes up to Boy Scout Peak. It is a nondescript peak and you did not miss anything.

4 x 3 on the San Bernardino Ridge via Momyer

This weekend I went up the Momyer trail to the San Bernardino ridge. Talk about social distancing; from the junction with the trail to Alger Creek, I saw nobody until the descent via Dollar Saddle--and even then only four people before the last 2 miles to the trailhead. The trail up is steep and cli...

Re: Poisonous surprise!

I have them in my yard in the Santa Monica Mts. Apparently the species here are not poisonous. I don't know about the one pictured in this thread, but typically California scorpions west of the deserts might have a toxic sting, but are not dangerous. (of course one could be allergic to the toxin)

PCT on the Desert Divide

We had never done the northern part of the Desert Divide (or Apache Ridge) and decided to hike it Thursday. Our hike began at Humber Park in Idyllwild. From there we ascended 2.6 miles to Saddle Junction to pick up the PCT. South on the PCT to Chinquapin Flat, Little Tahquitz Valley, around Red Tahq...

Re: Sisar Canyon

We were 1.2 miles away. The entire area as far as we could see was a field of poodle dog. If you are going through the Thomas Fire burn area, expect it. I am not sure if it stopped before the Nordhoff Ridge Road, but from our vantage it did not.

Re: Sisar Canyon

I have been wanting to do White Ledge. I heard that since the fire the vegetation might be clear and it would probably be easier now to make it to the top. Looking at your pics, I guess not. Poodle Dog is a nuisance. If you want a challenging hike do Eagle Rest . This hike was a butt-kicker and ins...

Re: Sisar Canyon

We were looking at going to the Hines Peak/LadyBug area. The Dawg began at about 200 vertical feet above White Ledge Campground. It was passable for .8 of a mile, about half way to the road junction above. Then it looked too risky and a cold brew sounded much better. The trail from Sisar to White Le...

Sisar Canyon

We hiked Sisar Canyon up to White Ledge and beyond for the first time. The road says "private road no trespassing" but it is a public easement and there is no problem driving up to and parking at the trail head. It was a beautiful canyon with wildflowers everywhere, but...read on trailhead...

Wrong Tenaya, Tenaya Peak is in the Sierra. I used to do this hike a lot when I lived down there. It is a good fast hike to a relatively remote peak. Some nice views from the summit.

The rock circles have been there for at least 20 years. I suspect they get repaired now and again.

Re: FUNGUS AMONG US!

I saw two of these puffballs on the side of Mt. Wilson last week. Their edible stage doesn't last long. Both had a ton of spores just ready to be set free. When they are young you have to be sure they are puffballs and not the egg of another mushroom. So, echoing Wes' comment in another post, don't ...

Ben, if you stay on the road (1/2 mile longer) you avoid all of the dog. I think there is another year or two before it is crowded out be the returning chaparral plants, but some has already been crowded out by mountain white buckthorn
