Munching on the narrows could be interesting. How much walking of the bike did you have to do?

Re: Icehouse to Middle Fork Lytle Creek
I've been asked for my permit a few times over the years. One time they were looking for a lost hiker and wanted to record who had been through a particular area and what they had and had not seen. The permits are free, so a good idea to pick one up at the trailhead

Re: Shroom
It is hard to tell anything by this picture as it does not show the entire mushroom and it appears quite old and desiccated, but it looks as if it might be amanita ocreata or amanita smithiana, both deadly poisonous. Ocreata is referred to as the "destroying angel."

Re: TR: PCT Mojave Dam to I-15 via Silverwood Lake, April 2021
Good trip report, thanks. No hike is wimpy, we each hike our own hike. That is one of the great things about hiking. We did that section right after the Blue Cut Fire. It was fun to see it with foliage once again.

Re: What the heck are these weird red plants?
they are really beautiful and out in force everywhere this year. They might be parasitic, but the current thinking is that they are symbiotic with a mycorrhizal mushroom and a tree, though no one knows exactly how they interact and obtain food. They are supposedly edible but are protected under Cali...

The tail looks wrong for a yellow-backed spiny. I think it is a zebra lizard

No, long way to go, finished the San Jacinto Mts from Tule Spring in the Santa Rosa Mountains to Whitewater in the San Bernardino Mountains. We have a couple of gaps between Whitewater and Tehachapi still to go, then San Diego and the Sierra

Taco, that is one crazy-ass ride! We have been seeing PCT Nobos on our hike. Every time I think I should be doing that, and then think about my sore feet and all of that time alone, but maybe, just maybe it will happen for me as well

Black Mountain to Snow Creek on the PCT
Yesterday we finished the PCT in the San Jacinto Mountains (Tule Springs to Whitewater Canyon) by hiking from Black Mountain down to Snow Creek. The day started with a snow road closure up on Black Mountain. We walked down the road to the PCT with icicles falling off the trees. Temps in the upper 40...

Re: Fungus amongus
After the last big storm a whole family of shrooms popped up in my yard. 20210209_170609~2.jpg What would happen if I ate these? This is not a mushroom that I know off hand. Also would want a clear view of the stalk and the gills. But to answer your question one or more of the following three thing...

Re: Fungus amongus
I am getting into fungi and stuff. I'm growing Portabella mushrooms from a kit and learning to forage. I can tell you that is probably a mushroom. You're welcome. ;) Taco, the Los Angeles Mycological Society is having its annual fair virtual this year. It is on the 14th and there will be a session ...

On the Gene Marshall
In my continued exploration for trails that are not chock-a-block with hikers, I went out to the Gene Marshall trail. The northern terminus is at the Reyes Campground. This trail had everything: snow (got to do 1 1/2 miles of trail breaking), ice, mud (but only on really steep sections), overgrown (...

Re: Magic Mountain to Capra Road
mine was similar to Sean except that it was Strawberry Peak. A scientific article I read said that you need a higher concentration than for urushiol, the poison oak/ivy/sumac toxin. It then went on to say that it doesn't take much of either to cause a reaction. My guess is that brushing up against i...

Re: Magic Mountain to Capra Road
David R, that is what I found as well, but I found no references to the presence or absence of the toxin on the stems or on dead leaves. I assume that unlike Poison Oak, there is no toxin on the stems or elsewhere. Do you have any evidence on this? I don't have the memory response that you have howe...

Re: Magic Mountain to Capra Road
Definitely poodle dog. My understanding from the research I have done is that the toxin is only on the hairy green leaves. This would be unlike poison oak where the toxins are on the entire plant. Unfortunately there is not a lot of information on poodle dog. After one unfortunate encounter years ag...

There has been some trail maintenance so you no longer have to straddle the tree to continue on the trail.Uncle Rico wrote: ↑Nice. That's a long day. Haddock is beautiful.
Was there still a downed tree blocking the trail just below Chorro Grande trail camp?

Haddock Mountain from Chorro Grande
To work off the Thanksgiving dinner I did not have, I headed back out to the Chorro Grande. The temp was 24 degrees when I started, upper 40's in the afternoon when I returned. I saw only one person on the Chorro Grande, a runner in the lower canyon section. A crisp day for a hike to the top. Pine M...

Ontario Peak Part Deux, We went back up today. There is still some ice on the Ice House trail but it is easy to navigate. From the saddle to Kelly Camp there is mixed bare ground, ice and snow with a well stomped trail in the snow and ice. Snow conditions were quite good, It was similar from Kelly C...

We were the only ones to get 100 yards past the Saddle and on to Kelly Camp, no one got more than a few hundred yards from Ice House Saddle on the trail to Cucamonga. But the snow was awesome!!! too much fun

First snow on Ontario Peak
Yesterday (11/11) we went out to experience the first snow of the year on a hike to Ontario Peak. The ice and snow started at the parking lot for the Icehouse Canyon Trail. The ice in the canyon was slippery, so we put mini-spikes on. That was more than sufficient. Some sure-footed folks went withou...
