Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Wish I had been able to get out this weekend. It looks fantastic. Though…I can't imagine why you are wearing shorts.

Re: Cucamonga Peak

thanks for the tr. Cucamonga is a great hike. Welcome to the real world. It is really not how fast you hike nor how elegant you are, it is all in the doing, you and the mountain communing on the way to the summit or down the trail to some canyon or remote place. I hope to see you on the trails. Jerry

Re: Three Coyotes and a Snake

How do you tell the difference between a Pacific Gopher Snake and a San Diego Gopher Snake other than the laid back attitude of the San Diego Gopher? The more southern San Diego snakes tend to use the definite article "the" when referring to roads. For example, "No way I'm going to c...

Great pictures Phil. I am now inspired to do a long layover in Japan on my way to China. How long does it take to get out to 5th Station from Tokyo?

Thanks Rico, the sunrise is pretty amazing. That is a nice area that is sometimes completely devoid of people.

Re: Baldy, lunar New Year hike

I was on the Bear Flat trail the next day. The cool icicles in you pictures were still on the mountain but the snow and ice below 9,000' was melting fast. Hopefully we will get more tonight. Winter is Coming (we hope)

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Made another trip up to the top today. But…I got to use my crampons! I put them on just below the hard scrabble narrows. not a lot of snow but icy. Closer to the top a dusting of snow over ice. If it were not for the steep sections, crampons would not have been needed. On the way down there was a go...

Re: Baden-Powell Rescue

I think he may have taught us a lesson to hike prepared to spend the night. He had all the right gear so having to bivouac was not as much of an issue as it would have been had he been alpining it. and 85…fantastic!

Waterman 1/15/14

I only had the morning to hike so Daniel and I headed up to Waterman. It was the first time there for both of us. Of course we did not read the guide carefully until later, so we started up at the main ski lift. After ascending 500' we realized we had missed the trail and the road. Not willing to gi...

Late spring conditions. thanks for the trip report. All the trails to the summit are relatively clear with patchy snow and no traction devices needed. Hope for a good snow storm soon.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Hiked to the summit on the Bear Canyon Trail yesterday. Most of the snow is gone. The only crossing of snow is on the traverse to West Baldy before the barren traverse and there is no exposure where the snow is; just boot prints to step in. The weather was great, a little windy in spots but that is ...

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

Wonder what that's like these days. Can one get back there? Been too long. The trail up Colby Canyon is in good shape, but watch out for Poodle Dog Bush above Josephine Saddle if you are going to do the 3rd class rock route. There really is no reason for it to have been officially closed last year....

Much less snow and ice now. No traction devices required. Still, the wind off the ice can be cold. I wore my down jacket for the descent.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

I went up on the Baldy Flat trail on Friday. It was mostly clear. From the Hardscrabble Narrows to the summit there were patches of snow and ice. Most of it you could go around and the few you could not required some careful steps, but not many. Conditions are good, but no winter in sight. Is Winter...

Re: Anyone done Telescope Pk (death valley area)?

Mahogany Flats is a nice campground and the trailhead is right there as stated before. There is no water so bring plenty. Depending on snow and ice, you should have no problem. It is a great hike.
