Re: Timber

At the risk of sounding racist, those switchbacks were pristine until the Koreans discovered Icehouse Canyon.
:( I wonder if my ancestors said the same thing when they saw the white man in the mountains?

Wanna take a crack at the people using the East Fork, too?

Re: Injured Hiker Rescued at Bridge to Nowhere (Sat. 27th)

Does anyone have any additional information on the hiker (male, approx. 50 yrs. old) that was apparently airlifted from the Bridge to Nowhere? I saw him being carried towards the bridge and staff from the bungee jumping outfit aid a helicopter was on the way. I saw it fly in but. By the looks of th...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over

I've never been effected by either poodle dog or poison oak/ivy...ever. I'm either immune or lucky or both, I guess. And now that I've said that...I'm never going into the mountains again!!! My sister claims to be immune to poison oak, but I only claim to be extremely resistant to it. So I do...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over

Otherwise I think the plant is attractive and has a nice aroma. I talked to a lot thru hikers last year while doing while doing Section C of the PCT about the Poodle Dog Bush. As far as the smell, I would say it was about 50/50 on whether they liked the smell. I personally find it very pungent and ...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over

God, I hate that stuff! Right after they reopened the the forest after the Station Fire closure, I was bushwhacking through that stuff on Gabrielino Trail just west of the Kenyon-Devore junction. I had shorts and short sleeves on. Yep, so I got it bad with one hundred percent coverage on all of my e...

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found

I just read an Associated Press article about their little adventure. It's the best write up I've read so far. The moral of the story is, do not leave the trail so that you can "touch the clouds". For some reason they decided to bushwhack up to the top. D'oh! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new...

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found

I just read that she was found in Holy Jim Canyon. I've never been there, but after looking at maps of the area, it seems that all of the canyons converge at the trailhead parking lot. Unless, that is, they went over ridge line into Riverside county. I guess it's hard for me to put myself in the sho...

Re: Camping on Mt. Lowe peak

Anyone one ever camped overnight on Mt. Lowe Peak, and is it legal with the Forest Service? I have never camped there, but yes, It is legal to camp anywhere in National Forest unless otherwise posted. It is known as dispersed camping. You can read about it here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/fi...

Re: Anyone seen a bear while hiking in the Angeles Forest?

I saw one last spring on a rainy day. It was middle sized bear in the last place I would expect to find one. Just past the first check dam on the lower Winter Creek Trail from Robert's Camp. He was standing right on the trail as I rounded the corner. As I was yelling at it, the bear looked more amus...

Re: Lone Tree-Idlehour Trail Loop

Fantastic news about the Lone Tree Trail. The last time I was there it wasn't quite ready for prime time. I appreciate the Every Trail link. I was never really a fan of their maps, so if you don't mind I created a map of your GPX file on Caltopo, with their new increadibley detailed and razor sharp ...

Re: Reliable Weather Website

I've really been digging http://www.mountain-forecast.com/ As far as weather sites are concerned, I really think that this is the best site I've seen, as it is mountain specific. I also really like that you can select different altitudes because I don't like to math. :) http://www.mountain-forecast....

Re: Bear Canyon Trail Camp - water & general conditions?

I tried to get from Millard Canyon to the Tom Sloan Saddle a couple of weeks ago. For the life of me I could not find any sign of a trail that left the canyon floor to the saddle. Getting past Dawn Mine was quite a chore as well, as the trail was all washed out by the mine. After that, it wasn't to ...
