10 year veteran of San Gabes.....moved near La Puente Hills (Powder Canyon, Schabarum, Chino Hills, etc.)

I still do the San Gabs.....just not Mt. Lowe/Wilson/San Gabriel/Straw as much as I once did, which used to be every week. Now my "go to" for exercise and to get away from it is Schabarum (sp?) and Powder Canyon....maybe Chino Hills (haven't been yet). Anyone familiar with this area? Mount...

Re: Roofing Nails on HWY 39 - Road Sabotage or just unlucky?

The truth is this- I think much of this should be blamed on the CHP. Why? Because they have been warned and warned and warned.....they have been told and told and pleaded with to do something about the car and croth-rocket TERRORISTS endangering the public and ruining everyone's good time in the OUR...

Cabins for rent in San Gabs?

I know there are a few up at Crystal Lake.......but are there ever any pvt rentals of any others? I was just up in Millard Canyon (Pasadena)......and got to thinking how neat it would be to spend a couple days up there. Any such thing?

Re: Brown Mtn Summit from Millard?

Yea, I've done it from the Mt Lowe road / Tom Sloan Saddle (passing through Mt Lowe Camp, which I still call Alpine Tavern)....which seemed significantly more than 10 miles rt. I've also done it from the west ridge after parking my mtn bike there. What I've heard is that there is a trail that goes a...

Brown Mtn Summit from Millard?

I been reading that you can do brown from millard canyon slash campground, and that the round trip is only 10 to 11 miles. That seems really short. Anyone done it this way that can give me some advice? Thanks

Wikiup Campground? Strawberry Pk trail fromt the North??

Heard someone mention it (wikiup) recently, but I've never heard of it. Found it on a google map, and know the basic area off Colby Ranch Rd (which is a spur off Upper BTC Rd...pretty near AF Hwy as I recall). I think I went down in that area one time during a motorcycle ride...but don't recall seei...

Re: Millard Campground (Pasadena)

The most dangerous thing out on the trail is NOT a bear or a lion. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html no kidding. WTF is this about?? A "critical" attack and injury on a hiking trail? I have my theory on just the type of person who would pull this and why.....we'll see.

Re: Millard Campground (Pasadena)

What time of day was the bear stealing the lunch? I thought they were mostly at night. I have been going up the ridge DIRECTLY on top of Lake Ave. a few times a week. From there, making that connection to Mt. Lowe road, up to the Mt. Lowe Railray Trail, and down to echo......by myself, beginning at...

Did you talk with anyone that came up from Shortys Well?

Wanted to know the water situation at Hanaupah Spring
No...only saw a few people and it was so windy, we couldn't talk. Don't know about Hanaupah Springs.

Nice. Did you see the graffiti on Telescope? The camp pic is the only link that pointed to a file to use the ", without the quote marks, to make them inline images. On this forum you click Img once to open the tag, and then again after you have typed in the link to close it. Or just manually t...

Death Valley- Mahogany Camp and Telescope Peak

Not sure if it was worth the 4 hours drive each way; but it was very nice. We ended up leaving around 6:30AM (from Santa Monica). We arrived at Mahogany Camp around 12:00; and began hiking by 1:00. The wind was absolutely insane. I'm from Florida and have seen some serious storms and wind. However, ...

Heading into Death Valley in the AM....Telescope Pk

Taking off at 5:00in the AM for Death Valley. Four of us are planning on camping at Mahogany (8,100') and doing Telescope Pk (11,100'). The guys want to get to the campground and immediately leave to attempt Telescope the same day. I VERY much doubt that's doable (for us anyway) and be able to get b...

Millard Campground (Pasadena)

The last few times I've been up there, I noticed a sign that read "campground closed". I did not get out and walk up to the campground area (I was just turning around after mtn biking fom Sunset Ridge).....but curious if Millard is actually closed? Maybe it's just a drought thing due to al...

I was gonna say Millard campground, but not a good view of the sky. Maybe about a mile hike to get there and I don't know if it's technically supposed to be a campsite, but what about the former Camp Sierra picnic area along sunset ridge? I've been down to Millard (just the lot) a few times over th...

Trying to figure the closest car camping location (okay, maybe up to 1 miles hike from the car) from a departure place like Pasadena. ?? The number of people ever documented to be killed by black bears in CA (the only type of bear currently in CA)= ZERO

Black bears do not even protect their cubs. CA blacks are harmless. There are brown colored black bears.....they are "cinnamons". Essentially, a ginger black bear.

Curious about just how tough the two steep class-3 climbs are on the W side of Strawberry. Some people claim it's very dangerous and scary (turn around territory)...while others say "not a big deal". I have no rock climbing experience, and really don't like it much to be honest. Climbing 1...

Some buddies and I have a place we call "Secret Ridge" in the San Gabs. Most amazing area I know of. Huge, secluded, flat, mostly soft sand (hidden clearing)....and looks down on the SGV..totally secluded and remote even though it's just 1/4 mile off a trail. It would be the coolest camp s...

Re: Look For The Skid Marks

The mountain roads are there to enjoy, not to race on. It's ridiculous. People out trying to enjoy the area and have a good time being harassed by racers in cars or bikes. ANYONE who crosses a double-yellow line on mtn roads should be dealt with. I guess once I hit about 40 years old, this became pr...
