I've done big Iron from the South (the "easiest" way)....but want to try it from the ridge which I recall being about 1 mile beyond the bridge to nowhere. Assuming Stanley Miller is on the way, or nearby?
Anybody done this one who can give some tips?

Re: Anyone done Telescope Pk (death valley area)?
Thanks Richard et al.....good info. Looks like, depending on recent weather conditions, the road should be fine for a 4wd truck. Probably no worse than getting to Blue Ridge or Guffy.
We're going Nov 1....that's set in stone.

Re: Anyone done Telescope Pk (death valley area)?
thanks Pat! Mahogany seems like the place. I have a 4wd SUV.....so that should be okay. I hate to beat on my truck though. Getting to and from Guffy was a real PITA for me. Oh well....sure it's be okay if done slowly. Thanks for the info. Looks like that's the only established trailhead for Telescop...

Anyone done Telescope Pk (death valley area)?
Might be heading up in early Nov. I would like to camp...but not sure if there's anything nearby. Car camping is fine, if it's within a reasonable distance from trailhead.
Also, general thoughts on Telescope would be appreciated. Just a shot in the dark![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)

Re: On the CHEAP- 1/2 person tent that's okay in rain?
thanks Jeff. So, I'm gathering that any tent without a separate rain fly (single wall) is probably not going to be reliable in the event of a serious rain. If that's the case, I need to find the best fit for me, that also has a FULL rain-fly (seen several with just a little "hat" on top......

Re: So how does this government shut down effect us exactly?
Yea, if there's a compground (car camping)....the gate to that parking lot will be closed. I suspect ALL "national forest" road (designated "N" xxxx) are gated. I ride a motorcycle and just go around it.
Nobody can "close the forest". Sorry Charlie.

Re: On the CHEAP- 1/2 person tent that's okay in rain?
Thanks Matt. Yea, I could drop $200 or so and get a reasonable tent, that comes with a rain fly. I know that. But like many things in life, there are often cheaper ways to skin the cat. I'll check out the site you provided, and do some more research. One of my buddies has a Big Agnes that is perfect...

Re: Best sunscreen?
spend money on sunscreen. You MUST get full UVA and UVB protection. One burns. One doesn't, but is doing major damage all the while. Another thing to consider is "photo stability" Is the active ingredient broken down in the presence of sunlight? I buy the expensive stuff in the case. It's ...

On the CHEAP- 1/2 person tent that's okay in rain?
When I first started hiking (I'm a mountain biker, and have been since I moved here in 1998), I eventually decided I should have a small tent. So, I bought a really small Wenzel 1-banger (Lone Elk). At the time, I didn't know anything about tents, and what features for which to look. I think I paid ...

I've seen them used on Survivorman. Compressing a gas QUICKLY creates heat. He was able to make an ember on the first try....and create fire with the ember. Sure it works.

Best Places to camp in the San Gabs?
.....some buddies and I like to camp up in the SGs, but most of them like a nice open area, where there is a clear view of the sky. Though I like that too, it's not necessarilly my #1 requirement. I'm more excited about a nice fire-ring.....but that's me. If I can have a fire-ring AND open sky.....A...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
Pretty easy to spot. I see the remains every time I climb Baldy via the Ski Hut, and have hiked down to the debris field several times. It's above the Ski Hut.....can't recall exactly how far....but you'll be looking down into a ravine to your left (above the ski hut). The wreckage is maybe 100 yard...

Staying warm (3 season-ish) without bag?
Background- I always try to hike "minimal". Thus, as little bulk as possible (it's not really a weight thing so much as bulk) is my objective. BUT....the last couple times I've camped in the San Gabs, even in summer (top of Baldy in July, Baden Powell in August), and I only brought 3 long-...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over
I've never been effected by either poodle dog or poison oak/ivy...ever. I'm either immune or lucky or both, I guess. And now that I've said that...I'm never going into the mountains again!!! Still, be careful. I've read that very often it doesn't affect people for the first, and sometimes the...

Re: First Time on Brown Mountain
Nice TR! congrats on getting up to the top of Brown. What's funny is that I thought I was the only person who knew about the secret water-tank near the old Alpine Tavern! guess not so secret. Question- do you think that water (leaking from the tank) is for sure good? I know it's coming from a spring...

Re: Tom Sloan Trail
For those of you who have been to Mt. Lowe Camp (aka Crystal Springs or Alpine Tavern).....there is a trail which heads westward , after walking through the campground area and past the restrooms. Re: Tom Sloan Trail
The trail from Dawn up to the Mt Lowe railway (and vice versa) is "closed so the forest can recover" (translation- we want this trail to go away, and if people don't use it for a little while, the forest will re-claim it....so it's off limits).

Need recommendations for a hike this weekend
It's my turn to pick a peak to bag....and so, I'm looking for ideas. The parameters: * In the San Gabs....don't want to drive more than maybe 30 mins from Pasadena.....20 would be better. * Short hike, so probably 2-3.5K vertical ....and something like 6-12 miles total would be fine. I don't have li...

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind
As a guy who works on trails in Altadena, I don't let the disrespectful hikers bother me or disrupt my enjoyment of the mountains. Such people are not worth considering, unless you catch them in the act, then you can say something and maybe convince them to change their behavior. I always have rags...

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind
yeah the litter blows my mind. I was at Chantry flats and was just blown away at all the trash left by the cars on the side of the road. Put it in your car and drive it home. I was at 7 11 one day and saw this guy eating their pizza, when he was done he opened his car door and dropped the cardboard...
