Re: Devil's Canyon Trail to Devil's Canyon TC and Falls

I would like to visit lower Devil's canyon too, but with such a far distance, it seems advisable to time it just right. In Jerry Schad's May trip he just got in time... http://www.sdreader.com/php/roamshow.php?id=20070510 and makes it seem like a wade/walk. Compare that to Nov 1st Erik Siering, http...

Re: The most challenging hike in the San Gabriels?

The most dauting canyoneering routes that I know would are all in the San Gabriel Wilderness. 1.West Fork Bear Creek 2. Canyon X ridge in either direction...this is a ridge that connects the West Fork SG river(@Devils Canyon) to Twin Peaks 3.Loop of Bear Creek-->West Fork Bear Creek--> Chileno canyo...

Re: Supercloud, Suicide, Stone +1, Rose Valley, etc.

boy, you are just running them off your list? At least now we know who has a nice 300 9mm rope to borrow :D canyoneering solo - another possibility instead of a high friction setting is to start off normal and have some way to add friction....lest anyone think Im a teacher(not!), but once I got the ...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

Can be confusing for sure in the San Gabriels with so many names thrown around. The hike you went on is actually the Fall Creek Camp trail which connects Fall Creek Camp to Hidden Springs. Fall Creek fireroad , well Im not sure of the real name of this fireroad as it goes from the Big Tujunga road a...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

to the GFF viewpoint is 8 miles RT FYI...elevation gain is 1600 total. I would wait until Mar or Apr so the falls actually have some water...and they are not next to the trail so a pair of binoculars are a plus...still a nice place to grab a bite and return. Heres a map marked at the viewpoint(perso...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

The Big Tujunga sees most of the trouble at certain spots like Stonevale/Vogel Flats, Fox/Condor trailhead, Fall Creek trailhead@ BT road, Pipe canyon. I think a lot of people would have trouble finding trail canyon as its off the main road. Other areas can be safe..my guess is miscreants dont know ...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

I would guess that car break-ins are greater in Tujunga than Azusa. ....I would say upper big Tujunga is much safer though. The trouble seems to start at downstream of Colby Ranch. Theres less graffiti, but its never been cleaned so every rock has some graffiti all the way down into the Narrows. Spe...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

Hope I didnt imply that the guy was a SOB. I was just surprised to see someone pull out a rifle. The only other experience with guns was someone shooting out of the Pine Mountain area/Redbox Rincon Rd. Whatever they were shooting at, if anything.....anyway that was an easy decision to just turn arou...

Re: SG Canyoneering Sept

Allison Gulch, just another good canyon in the SGs and somewhere on my list..LOL...my problem is the Iron Fork is a big time magnet and is a classic...not to mention BTN canyon, which everytime I pass I vow to check out. Best would be to split up the area in 2 days. Clean descent from Mount South Ha...

Re: bad things happen in nice places

Driving on Hwy 39 before dawn was certainly interesting. Driving past a police checkpoint at the bottom of San Gabriel canyon.....theres no question you are on your own after that....I thought I would be alone, but no, someone in a big hurry leaned on my bumper to get off the road. I caught up later...

Re: Lytle Creek - Trail to Buck Point?

According to Brennan's website on South Lytle Creek

, which basically says its not going to happen.

Re: SG Canyoneering Sept

Oct - try and catch some fall colors later in the month. Canyon: Middle Fork Lytle Creek Hiking: West Fork San Gabriel River to Cogswell Dam with exploring the endings of Weatherby ,Butterfield, or Big Mermaid canyons so as to get a canyoneering atmosphere. The best time for canyoneering in my opini...
