Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek

I know somebody who spoke with one of the Ventury County Sheriffs Deputies who was involved in the the recovery. This is second hand, but the source is solid, he said that the Deputy told him that they do not suspect foul play, and that Herdman was high as a kite. Autopsy is being performed today by...

Re: Cobblestone Mountain via Redrum Ridge

Thanks, Yeah, T-Bolt is a goody. If you're thinking of expanding your range into the SLP, my site has quite a bit of peakbagging info, and there are links to other SLP resources. Be prepared for everything to be a bit rough around the edges when compared to the Angeles. If you have questions you can...

Nahh, not the point, maybe used to be...but I grew up. I just want somebody to repeat this one day. Would be entertaining to get somebody else's take on these two lines. Keep doing the voodoo that you do bro. -DS

Sulfer Peak, Southern Los Padres 11/28/12

Pop on over for a TR of a remote and rarely traveled peak, one with some of the finest views in SoCal. It's off-trail and ugly, which is why I went. -Stillman http://davidstillman.blogspot.com/2012/ ... 12812.html https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/gallery.myff.org/gallery/_1452243/IMG_0753.JPG ...

Maulce Peak as a dayhike, 22.5 miles of unmaintained trail

Madulce Peak Fire Lookout is one of those HPS summits (Sierra Club Hundred Peaks). It's a great peak and a cool day. Beantown,
Here's a link to a site that has some recent info on at least Piedra Blanca and Pine Mountain Lodge. The site is written by a veteran Los Padres hardman and his info is legit.

Re: Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

Sorry bro, no recent news on Reyes/Bear Trap. Both those canyons are on the north side and I'd suspect that there would be water in Beartrap at least. Haven't been through since last spring though.

Re: Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

As for the Sespe hot springs, it's just a hot creek with a couple pots in it. It's not very developed and isn't really a garden spot. Willet has shade, access to Sespe water, is more developed, and quite popular. As to your route, I'd personally reverse you direction. Reyes and Bear Trap canyons are...

Re: Tips for hiking in the heat.

Jim, I like your thinking. Speaking of adapting to hot conditions, I can tell you that I required a lot less water when I lived in the desert than I do today. Clearly I was more fit and 10lbs leaner back then, but I am convinced that one can adapt, given time, to the quirks of most environments.

Re: Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

Howdy and thanks. I try to think outside the map. As to your question, the short answer is "no". This watershed doesn't have any significant drop-offs and certainly nothing real enough to justify hauling gear all the way back there. Near-by Alder Creek has an adventurous descent, but its b...

Re: Tips for hiking in the heat.

Jim, that's a question with no easy answer but to say that the losses are significant. I would suppose that it would have a lot to do with the relative humidity and the individual. In general the higher the body mass index (BMI), the higher the individual extracellular water weight, but that high BM...

Re: Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

Most of the way out to Willet is set back from and above the Sespe, so getting down to the parts that do have water is an enormous pain. Best place to top off is at Bear Cnyn, there's decent flow of good water there. You can get to water basically right off the trail at Bear, which is an interesting...

Re: East Fork San Gabriel river 9/24

People suck. Last spring I ran across a campsite with two tents and miscellaneous gear abandoned, apparently storm related. I later found out that the people responsible for leaving all that gear had called the local USFS demanding their gear back. You need a license to go fishing but just about any...

I guess this may be coming a couple months late but hey, somebody out there might appreciate this essay on getting out and about when temps are triple digit. There's some good info here and it's based on medicine and experience.

Re: Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

Thanks for the nod. Creek crossings out to Willet are few, and those crossings are dry. However, there is good water at Willet. Enjoy yourself, and don't mind my dis of south land hot springs. My problem is that I first discovered hot springs in places like Mammoth and Couer d'Alene and Elko.

Project Sespe Connect: walking the entire river.

The Sespe River is one of the only undamed, undiverted waterways in all of Southern California. The Sespe is protected as a National Scenic Waterway and its 65 mile length has proven to be full of surprises. The aim of this project is to walk every inch of it. I've completed the vast majority of the...
