Re: Monarch the Grizzly
Near Oso Canyon on the Tejon Ranch is one of those bear traps that were made to look like a small log cabin. This is between Castac Lake and Liebre Mtn.

Re: San Gabriel Mountains National Monument
It was quite packed. I think the bus-loads of imported supporters had something to do with the size of the crowd.
Odd.
I'll post a pic when I take it off my phone.

And you guys are only talking about one specialized type of use. Imagine all the different things going on and how a completely different set of rules will affect them. Kind'a scary that we are being told not to worry and that this change is needed to protect the forest, and make it cleaner,...

Aw, com'on Mike. It says right in the release that the goals are to make the forest cleaner and more enjoyable for the people who use it. Who wouldn't want those things?

I couldn't help but notice that the article didn't go into detail or encourage folks to attend the meeting; despite most of the the text of the article being taken directly from the FS release which does have those details. The meeting will be on 8/26 at the Baldwin Park Performing Arts Center, 4640...

I've been told that I will be attending that meeting on the 26th. It might be interesting to see what they have to say.

I hear of this about once a week in many different places. I f I had to guess I would say the coyote was just sizing things up while considering if a meal was available. To him I would say:

It's a nice place, if my memory from 1969 is accurate. We didn't get to use the pool as my class's session was was in the winter. Where was Long Beach's other school camp, Camp Owongo?

She was healthy looking, and not lactating. I couldn't find one tick or flea. The slightly matted look on some of her fur is from squirting her down out of the tree with a garden hose after being confident the drug was going to work. Good timing. I was just summoned to help teach the urban wildlife ...

We'll see if the Tehachapi Mountains are better for her.

With advanced mange in a group of young coyotes, LA could have its first invasion of chupacabras.
Think of how many hits one could get on their FB page or website. The only things needed are a bad video and a slow news day.

Mastiff/Lab mix, and an old one at that. In the first few seconds of a version no one will show, you can see its long ears hanging down the side of its head. What everyone is watching is part of a video, of a video, of a video. When I was in school, history teachers called that, &quo...

Re: Mountain Lion Killed by Deputies in Rancho Cucamonga
I've been doing this stuff long enough to know not to second guess decisions that are made on-scene when I wasn't there. A lot of factors have to be rapidly considered when such a decision is made; and we'll never get the totality of the circumstances from press releases and media accounts. I did pu...

Re: Mountain Lion Killed by Deputies in Rancho Cucamonga
I've been off work from surgery on 7/1 so I haven't heard the skinny on this one. I do know that SB Co deputies don't have any chemical immobilization capabilities. Even if they had the equipment, they wouldn't have the legal authority to use it on a lion. My district is LA Co., north of I-10. Me an...

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
If a logical person was to look for a common thread in the responses, they would see a strong consensus: The facts as being reported do not add up. Period. Speculating as to which factoids being reported are true, vs. which is complete BS- is meaningless. G-I-G-O. (Garbage In, Garbage out) The guy i...

There are literally miles of burnt trees falling or almost falling on to the road at the Mill Creek end. Crews have been doing a lot of sawing and dragging the hazardous ones but at the pace they are working, it could take a while.

Re: Recreational Shooting
If you ever saw Lytle Creek in its heyday, it was scary. There was no brush taller than about your waist and there was a mat of shotgun hulls about 8" thick in the firing area. Kentucky Canyon wasn't much better.

This reminds me of the LASD deputy that went for a day hike in Devil's Punchbowl a few years ago, and was never heard from again. Just saying.... Re: Recreational Shooting
Most places in the ANF are off limits to recreational shooting. They had some areas available in the past, but there were so many problems with the areas getting utterly trashed, that they closed some or all off them down. I don't know if any "open shooting" areas exist anymore. HJ Exactl...

I still think the guy would make a good candidate for mayor. Who he is means he should know better than to be taking video while that close to a brown bear.

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014
There was a bear at Little Jimmy a couple of years ago who was knocking down people. The minute they'd set their packs down, he'd shove them out of the way and go at it with there pack. I think they may have put that bear down. HJ Yeah, that one and one other the following year at LJ were put down....
