Re: Climate Change
While the earth's temperature has fluctuated in the past, there is nothing in the scientific record that compares to the stunning, rapid rise seen since we started burning fossil fuels. Actually, the greenhouse analogy works perfectly. Why does a greenhouse get warm? Sunlight passes through the glas...

Re: Climate Change
Have you ever wondered why a car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up gets really hot inside, hot enough to kill a child? The reason is that sunlight passes through the glass warming the interior. But, glass is a great insulator for heat. It's why coffee mugs are made of glass. So, the heat ...

{NOTE: This topic has been split from the thread on Andrew Curtis' Tungsten Mine .} Man needs minerals and resources to make important things for industrial progress, and he needs to get them from somewhere, somehow. No, man doesn't. "Industrial progress" is killing the planet. I will be d...

If we could have stayed longer, we planned to hike from Tioga Road to Eagle Peak on day 3 and visit the Tuolumne and Merced groves of big trees on day 4. I also considered the one mile cross country hike to the Devil's Dance Floor. Next year.

Yosemite
It has been 11 years since we were last in Yosemite. Another trip was in order. I originally planned four days of hiking, but the hurricane caused us to hurry home before the airport closed. We got in only two days, but they were a good two days. We stayed at the motel in El Portal with this view of...

Somewhere in Minnesota is the Superior Hiking Trail, a 310 mile long trail. Friends of ours go every summer to hike sections of it.

Re: Cucamonga, Bighorn, Ontario
Many years ago while ascending Cucamonga, I kept eyeing that ridge up Bighorn. It looked very doable. We came back next week and did it by itself. There was no use trail then. Basically, you just go straight up. The footing was decent and it's not that steep. You managed to see everything that Iceho...

No kidding, I had to look up all of those terms, too. Somehow, we have logged several thousand miles of hiking over the last twenty years and been to some amazing places without consulting a single geotag. The people steeped in internet social media don't realize that there are these things called g...

See this YouTube video. You have to scrub the oil off with a bath sponge or wash cloth. Simple hand washing is not good enough. All of your clothes and everything you touched likely has the irritating oil on it as well.

The building in the parking lot has been there at least 6 years. It was open on weekends for one summer where a couple of rangers handed out day use permits and maps. It has not been used since. I guess the forest service could not get funding to continue it.

Death Valley February 2019
We were in the park last week originally intending three hikes. The weather did not co-operate. The temps were 15 degrees below normal. The forecast was: Day 1 cool, but sunny, Day 2 40% chance of rain, and Day 3 cool and sunny with 25 mph winds. I figured that we would play it by ear and see what w...

According to the Sierra Club Hundred Peaks Section here: http://www.hundredpeaks.org/signatures/17d.htm Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts wanted three mountains that all started with the letter "T". So, Chapman Mountain became Timber Mountain. Name given by early Sierra Club skiers and hikers (ca. 1930)...

Re: Appalachain Trail, Virginia - Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap out and back
Thank you for posting this report. It's beautiful country. There may not be any high peaks, but there is, at least, rolling terrain. In March, we opened a new section of the Florida National Scenic Trail eliminating a road walk (Micco Landing to Oak Creek). It's 11 miles long with zero elevation gain.

The movie briefly covered Honnold's father mentioning that the man might have had mild Asperger's syndrome. I have a niece and nephew who are autistic which is along the same spectrum. If you haven't seen the movie Free Solo, go see it now. There is Alex Honnold hanging onto a few pea size bumps with 3000 feet of air under him. What balls! His climb has been hailed as the greatest athletic feat ever. That might not be hype. What could top it?

Re: 10 year veteran of San Gabes.....moved near La Puente Hills (Powder Canyon, Schabarum, Chino Hills, etc.)
When we lived in the state, we were about 5 miles from the western entrance to Chino Hills. The terrain is rolling hills. You can get a surprising amount of elevation gain as hill after hill adds up. For example, from the western end to Gilman Peak (the high point in the park) gains over 1400 feet. ...
