Re: 4 hikers rescued from ledge on Mt. Baldy

We were on Baldy's summit a few years ago and talked to someone considering the three peaks challenge. It was the first time they had done Baldy. They weren't sure about the location of the other two peaks. I get the feeling that this three peaks thing attracts a lot of amateurs for some reason.

Re: WHITE MTN ATTEMPT

AMS can strike one time and not the next. We take the herbal supplement gingko biloba starting about a week before going to altitude. And aspirin the day of the hike. For some reason, I think aspirin works better than the Aleve and Advil products. We never made it to White Mtn before moving out of s...

Re: East Fork - San Gabriel River - 7/19/08

When I lived in Tennessee 30 years ago, there were a few "good time" houses in certain neighborhoods. No, not that kind of good time. These places provided moonshine and gambling. Sooner or later, they all got raided. I think they were the last remnants of the moonshine industry. Compared ...

Now that California has legalized recreational pot, does that not put an end to clandestine pot farms? Just like the repeal of Prohibition ended illegal alcohol production.

The guy (Tom Mahood) is beyond hardcore. Look at the Search/Rescue section of his website. He found the Missing Germans of Death Valley and made 68 trips to Joshua Tree looking for missing hiker Bill Ewasko.

From http://mtbaldyskilifts.com/ Scenic Lift Rides Sugar Pine Chair Lift (chair 1) ferries riders from our parking lot to the Top of the Notch Restaurant. It gives access to miles of hiking trails including the popular route across Devils Backbone to the summit of Mt San Antonio (Mt Baldy). The ride...

I hiked the San Gabes and O.C. state parks for 20 years in shorts. I saw plenty of snakes with no problems. Just don't stick your hands or feet where you can't see. Don't go wading through thick underbrush. Don't sit on a rock without poking around the base first with a stick. You will be fine. Cons...

Re: Feds Taking Comments on Status of San Gabriel NM

The goal of this so-called "review" is to reverse national monuments and open the land to logging, mining, and cattle grazing. And all at far below market rates for favored insiders. A review per se means nothing. You can review a ham sandwich. It is totally unclear what authority, if any,...

Gaviota Peak was one of our first hikes eons ago. I didn't even own a camera. The day was overcast. As we approached the summit, we hiked into the cloud deck. So, there were no views at all - totally socked in. We never got back to the place. Thanks for the pictures showing what we didn't get to see.

1. Should reports for the Los Padres NF be archived separately? Let the members who hike and post about the Los Padres decide. Central and Northern California ranges that are not in the Sierra Nevadas have no place to go. There are probably not enough reports from these areas to justify a separate ...

How was the elevation gain since you've now spent a couple years at sea level? Or was there some acclimation beforehand? The only acclimation was hours on the stair master. Coffin Peak gains 852 feet. The other hikes were also uphill. We totaled 1934 feet for the three days. Fortunately, it didn't ...

Re: Charging for rescues

Our tax dollars cover a lot of stupid situations. If you are smoking in bed and set your house on fire, the fire dept still comes to put it out. It's annoying when you see people in generally accepted high risk activities like wing suit flying or BASE jumping getting expensive rescues. But, the gene...
