Re: Hikers vs Deer

No, I never worked at Turners. The guys who were big on hunting were, like me, computer programmers. They talked about Turners a lot. I think Turners sold some sort of guide to the hunting season timetable or maybe it was a free handout supplied by DFG.

Re: Hikers vs Deer

The timetables for hunting season are buried in the Fish and Game website http://www.dfg.ca.gov/ , but you may need a lawyer to help interpret them. It might be easier to ask at a Turner's Outdoorsman store. I used to work with some guys who were big time hunters. I think the hunting season is gener...

Re: Winter is here!

We are not into ice and snow travel. So, we spend the winters in the Orange County parks: Chino Hills SP, Crystal Cove SP, and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. For some reason, we have not hiked in the Santa Ana Mountains. A few weeks ago, we drove up Silverado Canyon to check out the trailhead and the...

Chino Hills SP 11/14/2009

We did a 16 mile loop around CHSP today. It's mating season for tarantulas. We saw these two: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Chino-Hills-2009-11-14/DSC03538a/713319197_ktHbG-M.jpg https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Chino-Hills-2009-...

Re: Coyote mauling in CANADa

I can't remember hearing about an adult death from a coyote attack. I have never seen a coyote in the ANF although they must be there. The Orange County parks have their share and sightings are rather frequent. A few years back in the inland part of Crystal Cove SP, we saw a pack down in a canyon fr...

Fran and I visited Hidden Lake back in '03 when we wanted a light hike before doing Whitney. Navigation was easy with GPS and topo map. Hike the trail until you are due south of the lake and head north. We had the whole lake to ourselves. It is a real beauty spot. Nice report and pictures - thanks f...

What kind of license do you need to operate the unit? My fading memory thinks a Technician class where you don't need to know Morse code, but that could have changed since I last read up on it.

Illegal motorcycle riders in a state park. Gasp!! Who knew that such things went on?
As for the pot farms, I vow to personally root out all of them.

State Park Closures

We were short on time Saturday, but wanted to get a hike in. We did a 10 mile loop through the western end of Chino Hills State Park. It has recovered nicely from the fire. Most of the old oaks survived, singed but still with green leaves. At the western trailhead next to Carbon Canyon Regional Park...

Re: Water at Ski Hut (Baldy Bowl)?

A few hundred feet before reaching the Ski Hut, a spring flows across the trail in two places. The first is pretty thin, but the second has a good flow coming out of a small pile of rocks on the right side of the trail going up. The second is where we refill. I don't mind drinking water that comes o...

The spring below the hut and the creek beside the hut had a good flow on October 17. The spring water does not need filtering. We have been drinking it straight for years.

Re: Whitney MT -vs- Baldy via Bear flat

It is all about the steepness of the grade. Both gain around 6000 feet plus or minus. On Whitney, it's spread over 11 miles. On Baldy, it's only like 5 miles. It's a 10% grade versus a 20% grade. I can walk all day and all night on the flat and feel good about it. But a really steep grade whips me q...

There has been some graffiti on a few rocks at the very start of the trail - probably left by the non-hikers that you see at the creek. But, now some idiot has tagged the trail!? It would not do for me to carry a handgun while hiking. I would have to open a private cemetary to bury my own dead. What...
