Re: Cortelyou Spring Crag & Mt. Islip: 11-06-2010

Here is what I was told by a ranger at the Mt. Baldy Visitors Center years ago. If you forget your pass, hike anyway. If you get a ticket, there is a place to write in the pass number that will excuse you. I don't know if this is true anymore.

Anybody on Baldy today (Saturday 11/6)?

We were on Telegraph today. Baldy looked socked in. Here is a picture made from Telegraph. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Telegraph-And-Thunder-2010-11/Pano49114917/1080318595_TC2JC-XL.jpg The approaching cold front made for interesting clouds. https://eispiraten....

Re: cucamonga wilderness permits?

I have encountered rangers asking for permits twice in the last 12 years. Even then, they were issuing field permits to those who needed one. If the visitors center is open, then I get one. If not, then I hike permitless. After all, there is no quota in the San G's. It's just a way of tracking visit...

Re: Amgen Tour of California 2011

It occurred to me that traffic on Mt. Baldy Road on race day is going to be crazy. Everybody and his dog will try to get up there. So, I called the Buckhorn Lodge and asked about reserving a Friday night room 7 months in advance. Turns out, I was the second caller. The lady took my name and phone nu...

The fun will start when the race organizers spot me with a big"DOPERS!" sign on the side of the road. Is the sign intended for SGMDF members? Oh.....you're talking about the bicycle riders. Considering how Floyd Landis motored up the Col des Saissies, I've been wondering what testerone co...

In the corporate world, this is called getting kicked upstairs. You want to get rid of someone, but for whatever reason firing is not an option. So, they get promoted to a job in another division. At least, they are gone from what they screwed up.

Amgen Tour of California 2011

The bicycle race will have a Mt. Baldy finish for stage 7 on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The race starts in Claremont, but the exact location of the finish line has not been announced that I can find. The obvious candidates are Mt. Baldy Village, Manker Flat, or the base of the ski lifts.

Re: pot in cow canyon

I respectfully disagree. OK, I'll bite. Why do you disagree? Even if you make pot legal in California, the Mexican Cartels aren't going to give up smuggling and killing and get jobs at Walmart. There will still be millions of dollars to be made. How will the Mexican cartels make money from pot if e...

Re: pot in cow canyon

Pray that Prop 19 passes and ends this staggering waste of resources. Pot being illegal makes as much sense as beer being illegal. Besides, if you can't figure out how to get medical marijuana, then you don't have the brains to fall off a log either.

Check your health insurance. It may pay for some visits to a physical therapist. I had knee issues several years ago when I had Cigna PPO through my then employer. They paid for 60 PT sessions per year.

I think you may have passed us coming and going as we trudged up Ontario Peak. Look at the trip report for the Palisade Glacier for our picture. Ontario does not normally get as much traffic as it had Saturday. Maybe the Evergreen Hiking Club had an Ontario day??

I find it hard to believe that you could stir up a bee hive without noticing it or getting stung yourself. I think it's pure coincidence that you were doing trail maintenance when this other guy got stung. Tell him that he's in the backcountry, what do you expect?

The pipes are located across the camp from the trail. From where the trail takes a left turn to head up to the Bighorn/Ontario junction, keep walking west about 100 feet. Look for a patch of green grass. There is a faint use trail leading to the pipes. We have been drinking Columbine Spring water wi...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

We hiked Ontario Peak Saturday, Sept 18. The water situation at Kellys has not changed. The first pipe is dry. There is water pooling at the second pipe, but it is coming from underground not the pipe. As an open pool, I think you want to purify this water before using. https://eispiraten.com/images...

A few years ago, while laboring up Cucamonga's switchbacks, I noticed that Bighorn's southeast ridge looked very hikable. So, we tried it the next week. Navigation was simple: aim for the high point. We did follow a game trail for a while until it started winding around the mountain instead of going...

Icehouse Canyon Ranger Station

For about two months, the forest service has opened a mini ranger station in the Icehouse Canyon parking lot. You can buy an Adventure Pass or get free maps and brochures or get a wilderness permit. We hiked Baldy via the Ski Hut trail yesterday, too. We were on the summit from 12 to 12:30. You must have been there about the same time since we saw the track team as well.
