Re: San Sevaine Road (1N34)

I have been wondering about this road. Thanks for posting the update. All I need now is to scrounge up 70k or so for a new Land Cruiser to drive it.

You are welcome to this pano taken from the trail junction above Kellys Camp. It covers West Baldy to Cucamonga Peak. Taco used it one year as the header picture on this board. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Ontario-Peak-2009-07-03/Pano29832995/581716474_Sumrq-M.j...

Brainerd Lake

We hiked to Brainerd Lake on Labor Day. The log bridge over South Fork Big Pine Creek is gone. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Brainerd-Lake-2011-09-05/i-2ShzBng/0/M/DSC05350-M.jpg We waded the horse crossing about 30 feet downstream of the former bridge. In the mo...

There have been a lot of sheep sightings lately. I guess the mountain lions haven't eaten all of them.

Big Horn Sheep sighting - Ski Lifts

We parked a car at the base of the ski lifts and walked down the road to Icehouse Canyon today (8/6). We hiked back to the lifts via the Three T's trail. While riding the lift down about 4:30, these two bad boys came out to have their picture taken. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.sm...

If, by some tiny chance, you actually encounter a ranger on the trail and they actually ask for a permit, then request a field permit.

HJ - No, Columbine is more like a full mile below the saddle and always flows. There is a small spring about 1/2 mile below the saddle that has early season water. Last Saturday 7/23, it had slowed down quite a bit. It will be dry soon. From the trail, it looks like a small, short creek. I have neve...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

We stayed at the Buckhorn for the Tour of California. Like the ski lifts, it's a low budget operation. The rooms are tiny and sparce - no phone, no refrigerator, no TV. But, our room was clean and bug free. It's a place to sleep when you are there for something else - it's not a resort. And I am gla...

Re: Wikipedia on Backpacking

We watch the Eiger Sanction at the start of every summer hiking season to get into training mode: Want a beer? You gonna call room service? We got beer. If you hauled beer up this rock, you're insane. I may be insane, but I'm not stupid. I didn't carry it, you did it. It's in your pack. Jesus Christ...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

Will Kellys Camp spring flow for the rest of the summer? The old spring tended to dry up by the end of summer. With the spring box being rebuilt and this being a wet year, it may last longer. It would be useful if those who spend time at Kellys would report on the flow. The spring 1/2 mile below th...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

We hiked Ontario Peak yesterday 7/2. The water flow is still excellent. A camper told us that the rangers rebuilt the spring box. Also, the spring about 1/2 mile below the saddle still has great flow. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Ontario-Peak-2001-07-02/i-cQ4w6m...

I thought chukkars were a desert bird, too. Here is one we saw in Death Valley near Corkscrew Peak, March, 2007.

I always count the time from car to car no matter how slow it is. We have a cabin at Glacier Lodge for Labor Day weekend. It will be the first time that we have ever walked to the trailhead. So that hike time will be cabin to cabin.

Re: Hikes where the sun don't shine?

Icehouse Canyon has some sunny stretches, but the majority of the hike is under trees. However, it is mobbed on weekends. The huge, paved parking lot will fill up between 7 and 8AM. In spite of the name and the 5,000 foot trailhead, it can get into the mid 80's on the hotter summer afternoons.

We hiked to Kellys Camp Saturday 6/11. Someone has repaired the spring box and installed a new pipe. Water is flowing better than ever. Thanks to whoever did this work. This is the second spring. A large, dead tree came down during the winter directly on top of the first spring, but it never had muc...

Icehouse Canyon rescue

As we were descending Icehouse Canyon Saturday afternoon 5/28, about 10 SAR personnel were headed to the saddle. They were rolling a gurney with a single, large wheel on the bottom. As they passed, we heard a radio message: "She is stable and alert. The injury is wrapped." We didn't see an...

AMGEN Tour - Baldy finish

We spent Friday night at the Buckhorn Lodge and set out on foot for the ski lifts at 10:30 the next morning. There was traffic, but nothing heavy or backed up. I don't know what time the road was closed to vehicle traffic. A steady stream of short, yellow school buses passed us. I assumed that they ...
