Re: My car was stolen, please keep an eye out!
I am really sorry that your car was stolen. I know that is a major bummer. Of course, everyone on the board is looking.

Re: Blinky the cat
Nice catch to get a picture of the bobcat. In 15 years of hiking, we have seen 1 bobcat who disappeared into the brush before I could turn on the camera. We have never seen a mountain lion. I keep hoping because I want pictures of both.

Re: Lost & Found
It's a long shot, but whoever lost it might have asked at the visitors center. Perhaps, if you let them know, they could help find the owner.

Re: San Jacinto -- Permit?
Not clear what to do if I want to get a 4am start before the heat of the day....I surely don't want to get a summons. The web site http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=636 says self-issue day hike permits are available even when the Idyllwild office is closed on Tuesdays to Thursdays. At the tram, the ...

Re: San Jacinto -- Permit?
We have done SJ twice from the Palm Springs tram. You get a self-issue permit from the ranger station at the start of that hike. If you are coming from Idyllwild, I assume that the ranger station there would have a similar arrangement. There is no charge or quota. Remember that SJ's summit is in a s...

What a bunch of wussy boys! When you realize that you will be the cat's next meal, don't run or fight - you will only die tired. Instead, throw your head back so the beast can get a clean shot at ripping your throat out. As you feel his teeth sinking in, shout out "Valhalla I am coming".

Re: 20111203 Death Valley Canyoneering - Deimos Canyon 3A IV
Thanks for posting these great pictures. We missed our spring Death Valley trip due to job conflicts. Seeing this report makes me determined to get back there this March. Death Valley has a lot to offer. If you are not familiar with the area, get Michel Digonnet's book "Hiking Death Valley"...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)
It looks like the wind storm hit Icehouse Canyon. Did you see many downed trees overall? The Whitney Portal Store board reports a lot of trees came down there, but the buildings and trailhead structure were spared. Mammoth Lakes basin reportedly has 300 fallen trees.

Re: Ginkgo Biloba
There is a treatment where the body can be trained to keep the hands warm when the weather is cold. It is used to treat a disease known as Raynaud's syndrome, but it might well work for anybody. The logistics are a little messy or I would have tried it myself. There is a story here: http://www.nytim...

Re: Ginkgo Biloba
We took ginkgo starting a week before each of our 5 Whitney summits. It definitely seemed to help prevent altitude sickness. We never felt nausea or dizziness. We did other stuff as well: arrive early and spend time at altitude, drink a lot of water thirsty or not, eat periodically hungry or not, ta...

The hunter has been charged. Here is an interesting bit of information about him. His name is Collier.

Nice pictures, thanks for posting. I see that the flag is still there. I appreciate the sentiments of whoever put up the flag, but they should also take the responsibility to replace it as it becomes worn. Baldy's summit is a harsh environment for flags.

Hiker shot by hunter
SUBLIMITY, Ore. (AP) — A California member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves was shot and killed in Oregon after authorities say a hunter mistook him for a bear. Christopher Ochoa, a 20-year-old from French Camp, Calif., and a friend were hiking through a field in Western Oregon on the way to Silver...

The postcard photographer Burton Frasher, who worked the period 1920 to 1950, took pictures of the San Gabriels along with much of California and Arizona. The Pomona Public Library has a searchable database of his work available online. It can be found here: http://content.ci.pomona.ca.us/index_fras...

Mt. Baden-Powell 2011-10-15
We have never done any of the hikes from the ACH trailheads due to the extra driving time from our home in the OC. Tim's report on Baden-Powell last month inspired us to put in the windshield time to drive to Vincent Gap. We really liked this hike. The trail surface has the best footing - pretty muc...

This reminds me of the road through Wildrose Canyon in Death Valley. It was originally paved, but the asphalt is washed out now. I assume that it dawned on Caltrans that it was impossible to keep that stretch repaired.

Re: How do I keep coyotes out of my yard?
We have coyote problems in north Orange County as well. Animal control is useless. They won't do anything unless a person has been attacked. All of the outside cats disappearing didn't count. A google search for "urban coyotes" will turn up suggestions, but who knows if any of them are rea...
