That is correct. The other pipe was under a downed tree.

Re: Kellys Camp water report

Wow. That's really low flow. Aren't there two pipes? Was the other pipe equally slow?HJ At one time, there were two pipes. Unfortunately, a large tree fell over one of them during the winter of 2010-11. That pipe never produced much anyway. Then the other pipe dried up to a drip. Rangers constructe...

Kellys Camp water report

We hiked up to Kellys Camp today, 7/21. There is still water coming from the spring. It took 2 minutes to fill a 24 oz. bottle. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/richardk.smugmug.com/Nature/Kellys-Camp-2012-07-21/i-SC8Xd2Z/0/XL/DSC00535-XL.jpg There is a nice view of Telegraph Peak from this tr...

Icehouse Canyon notes

We missed 6 weeks of hiking due to crap at the house. (Anything that is not hiking is pretty much crap.) At any rate, we needed a couple of trips up to the Icehouse Saddle to get back in shape for longer stuff. I have never seen the trail so crowded. We were virtually never out of sight of someone e...

Here are a few pictures of the Transit of Venus. I observed until about 5:30 at Fullerton's Mountain View Park when I had to bail. The transit continued still in progress at sunset. Missing Germans of Death Valley

Everyone here has probably heard of the Germans that went missing in Death Valley in 1996. Tom Mahood of the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit developed a theory about the disappearance and subsequently found the remains. He has now published a facinating account of the event which can be found here: h...

I don't know if this will save the season for the local ski resorts. Here are the gory details: Tonight: Rain, mainl...

Re: your choice of knife for your trip...what and why?

I carry an old Buck knife with two blades. One blade is smooth edge and the other is fully serrated. The blades can be opened, locked, and closed with one hand. Unfortunately, Buck no long makes this knife. I got a nice sharpener from AG Russell that is a wooden block with two ceramic rods. It will ...

Re: Ca Fish & Game Prez Bags Mtn Lion

I have no problem with hunters who do so to put meat in their freezers. I once worked with two guys who were avid hunters. I ate some of their venison and elk. They would not kill a mountain lion just to have a trophy as a matter of personal honor and respect for the wilderness. One guy even had a b...

Re: What number to call in an emergency?

This subject has come up on the Mt. Whitney board in the past. As I remember, the first call should go to the county sheriff. It's the sheriff who has the authority to call out SAR. In the Lone Pine area, 911 gets the highway patrol who are oriented to traffic accidents not hiking/climbing incidents...

We hiked a 13 mile loop around Laguna Coast Wilderness Park today. Now, I didn't take my camera because the 8 year old batteries have stopped holding a charge for very long. Re: End of the Adventure Pass?

Richard, the argument of the plaintiffs in the above decision is that the FS has no authority under current law to charge "solely for parking"; and they, as the court agreed, make a good case as such. I have no idea what authority the FS has. The courts (maybe Supreme) will decide that qu...

Really not what it was meant for. it's not the USFS' fault on this, blame your elected politicans in DC. Yes, that is the problem. Instead of properly funding national forests, politicians of all creeds have cut their budgets and forced them to rely on the AP. There should not be an AP. You should ...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

I have read the comments on the San Jacinto board about the Palm Springs tram closing early in high winds and stranding 17 people on top. It makes me wonder. What if you were riding the Mt. Baldy ski lift, summer or winter, and the lift failed in mid operation. How do the people dangling in the air ...
