Re: hiking barefoot
When I was a kid my father would run the trail from the Mt. Baldy waterfall to the summit a couple times a month, barefoot. We would walk to the notch and meet him as he headed back down. His feat was even more incredible considering that he was born with no toes. The front of his foot looked like t...

Re: Camping Gaz stove
Jim,
It does make sense, Thanks for the information.
What your saying is that the output pressure of the canister decreases relative to the temperature and as the Propane burns off.
Thanks!

Re: Camping Gaz stove
Thanks Jim, I had a feeling you'd chime in. I like the twist lock feature since there are no threads to cross. I was stoked at this ebay find, it's small size/weight and ease of use. The Twister 270 is a nice basic upright canister stove. I think you've got a good "worker bee" stove. Noth...

Camping Gaz stove
Picked this up un ebay for $5.50 Big-5 has canisters, large approx $10 and half size for $6. These have been discontinued in the US but are still available abroad. Couldn't beat the price. Works great.

Very scenic and great pictures. You would have made it if your pack only weighed, say..... 600 lbs.

Re: Sequoia - Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow
Nice trip report. I love that area! What kind of tips did the NPS biologist give you about the area? The biologist was leading a team that was interested in historic peat bogs that exist in a few rare places in the park. He told us about Sand Meadow, Cahoon Rock and Evelyn Lake as well as the diffe...

Re: Sequoia - Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow
My house was built by Walt Atwell. Aside from operating a mill, he was on the crew that built the trail/stairway to the top of Moro Rock. I used to catch trout behind his house (which neighbors mine) when I was a kid. He seemed like a hundred years old, and was probably close to that. I wish I had ...

Re: Sequoia - Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow
Sounds like a nice trip. I probably would've kept some of the trout instead of having canned chicken, but that's just me. 8) Gonna post pics? What stove did you use? This is hopefully a first hike of the season, We've been eyeing San Gorgonio and the WM . We learned a few things about equipment and...

Sequoia - Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow
Trekked out with my son and buddy from Atwell Mill to Hockett Meadow this past weekend. We got a late start due to the recovery effort of a motorist who had driven off the road 300 ft down a cliff. He survived but recovery vehicles blocked our way for over an hour. The initial hike out was 11 miles ...

Re: Stove help for a Svea 123
Thanks Jim, It hasn't been run empty as far as I know. The cap seal seems fine and doesn't leak at all. I'll time a boil when I get back from Hockett meadow! Hockett Meadow? Nice! Are you going in from Atwell Mill (north), from the west (Garfield Grove?), or the South (Mountain Home State Forest)? ...

Re: Stove help for a Svea 123
I don't have a photo of it. It's all brass and the valve points down, so I think it is an original version without the cleaning needle. I got rid of the 20 year old white gas and refilled it with a fresh vintage. It lights a lot easier now. I also took the tip off with the supplied tool (which does...

Stove help for a Svea 123
My father gave me a Svea 123 backpacking stove in 1979. I wiki'ed it and found they started making these in 1955, he bought it new and used it in the Sierra's for years. It kinda works but spits little bits of soot. It seems to need a thorough cleaning. Are manuals available for these stoves? How wo...
