Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Took a drive up to Baldy Village today a little after noon. Snow is falling and staying on the ground at the tunnels (about 3K) and baldy Village is looking like a winter wonderland!
Hopefully lots more on the way!

Hikeup:
It was nice seeing you today. Nice TR and great pix too! It was a beautiful day and the views up top were gorgeous.
I finished about 10:05. I went up to Orchard before I went back down. Figured you finished up before I did.
I'll have to try that route sometime.

Re: Cucamonga 09/13/08

Congrats on the summit:
I saw your group as I was headed down Cucamonga, about half way down the trail. You looked like you were moving right along. I'll bet the boys were just thrilled with their accomplishment and the view!

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

As of 8/31, the pipe is still flowing. It takes a little over 1 1/2 minutes to fill a 1 liter bottle. 4 weeks ago, it took a minute. So it is slowing down, but hopefully it will keep on going for a while yet.

Re: Attempted Baldy 9 Peaks Challenge, 02-Aug-2008

Tim: I guess that was you that I saw on The Bear Flat trail on Saturday - right around sunrise? I think I was the "solo hiker" you referred to. BTW thanks for not saying "some other old guy". I too was headed for a variation of a Baldy big loop hike and when I got into the 3 T's,...

Re: Best Hikes in southern UT

As long as you are in Vegas for a couple of days, look at some of the hikes around Mt. Charleston. It's a beautiful area with all kinds of hikes. I was stuck at a trade show there in May a few years back and did early morning hikes (about a 45 min. drive). On one hike, I even got snowed on! AND - it...

Re: Ski Hut?

I went DOWN the Ski Hut trail today (6/21) about 11:00 and went by the Ski Hut about noon. This was when I began to really feel the heat. Obviously it got warmer as I continued on down. The key would be to leave early (its light at 5:00 AM!). It was about 75 deg. on top of Baldy with a nice breeze. ...

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)

According to the Mt. Baldy Ranger station, the Bear Flat trail was opened up as of last weekend.
Should be interesting through the area where the Manzanita is/was/used to be. Fewer thorn scratches, MORE sun (ugh!). Glad it's open again!

Happy hiking.

As of 5/28, the Mt. Wilson trail (SierraMadre) was re-opened. There was no significant damage from the rains and the trail is in good shape. The Mt. Wilson trail race is re-scheduled for June 7.
Happy hiking!

Sierra Madre Trails closed

Basically, all trails with trailheads in the City of Sierra Madre have been closed due to the rains. That includes the Mt. Wilson trail, the Chantry Flats Gate and Bailey Canyon The trail race, which was still on track to take place this weekend, due to the efforts of many volunteers, has now been p...

No real flare-ups last night (Monday). Fire crews are beginning to leave and they are opening some of the streets back up now. Looks like they have it under control.

Re: Fire in Santa Anita Canyon: 2008-04-26

Last night the fire moved further west towards Bailey Canyon. It stayed low, closer to town and went around much of the fire retardant that they had put down on Sunday. New evacuations were ordered today at the West end of town North of Fairview. It's tough when they can't really fight the fire in t...

Here is a link to free calif. topo maps. http://www.klofas.com/topo/ They are huge files: Hi res tiff files of about 25M. A little tough to work with unless you have a program that works well with large photo files. Access to a color plotter is a big plus too but you can scale them or select portion...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

FYI - The trail to Ontario was definitely cleared of fallen trees a while ago (except for 1 biggie you can go around), although there were a couple of small ones that came down recently. It is a nice, gently climb and probably idea for snow shoes. Maybe we'll get that snow this weekend!

Valley of the Moon is just before you get to Coldbrook. We were involved in a service project at Coldbrook earlier this year and a ranger that was there said they were concerned about the bridges (due to the fires up that way) and that the highway wouldn't be opened to the public until after they ha...

Re: quick overnight backpacking trips

Hoegees campground out of Chantry Flats is about 3 mi. each way. Not a difficult hike. Has plenty of campsites and fire rings (check with forest service to see if fires are allowed right now). It can be crowded though.

Have a good time wherever you end up going!
