Incident near Wilson? 6/23

I climbed Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak this morning with my girlfriend from Eaton Saddle. While heading back down we saw a ton of emergency vehicles and CHP heading up Mt Wilson Road and ACH. Anyone have any info about what happened?

Re: Sespe bpack trip - Upper Reyes Trail Camp

Wow that's freaky.

I have no clue what that's all about but I doubt it's a grow op. I've come across two both in the SB mountains and they tend to just have piping going straight away from the creek so theoretically it should just take the same amount of water all the time but who knows?

Re: Sespe bpack trip - Upper Reyes Trail Camp

Ah makes much more sense. No we left early in the AM of Wednesday. Too bad you guys were all still sleeping, we could've introduced ourselves! BT was pretty nice, there is only water in i'd say about 200 yards of the creek. If you go upstream much it disappears and the same goes for going downstream...

Re: Sespe bpack trip - Upper Reyes Trail Camp

Hey dude, I'm a little confused. My friend and I overnighted at Beartrap 6/11-6/12 and your report says some of you went up to Beartrap? We didn't see anyone with us at Beartrap that night, but I think that we went through your camp at Upper Reyes on our way out wednesday morning. Sorry if we woke a...

Re: Tuolumne Meadows to Mammoth on the JMT

Oh man, what great memories from my JMT trip last year. That stretch was one of my favorites, especially that small fording across the creek just in the shadow of Donahue. It was so pretty in that area that we ended up staying the night on the other side of the creek there. Things look a little more...

Yikes! I hope it wasn't HAPE, if it is be very careful at altitude! A buddy of mine is retired ski patrol from steamboat springs and he's had to help peple with HAPE before. I know it's not always easy to do, but I almost always spend one night at the backpackers camp at horseshoe before going over ...

That's my strategy also! Sometimes I actually bring along some old trash with me for my car when I go up to the SGR to hike/fly fish. I've never personally had a problem, but I am in the minority of my friends.

I'm down the road in arcadia, i'd be walking up santa anita to the mt wilson trailhead. I'm just planning to wait to do this until cooler weather. Perhaps June gloom will provide me a day soon to do it.

Re: Sierra Madre to Mount Baldy

This is way cool. I have had a similar plan though much less intense. I wanted to do a door to door hike from my front door to wilson and back, but have that planned as a single day trip. I think your mileage is more than reasonable, and could probably polish this trip off sooner than that quite eas...

Jim, yes by modified I mean the one Zelph sells as "modified". No pot stand and a resealable lid. The lid is a major bonus in my opinion. Additionally, it has a smaller output on top supposedly designed to work in lower oxygen environments like the caldera and increase efficiency. I did an...

Re: Fire Safety: Alcohol vs. ESBIT

I use a modified starlyte burner in a caldera cone and I often think about the legality of my setup. I just hope that if it ever comes up, I can demonstrate how easily extinguishable it is and how the stove is spillproof. I think one of the biggest issues about regulating alcohol stoves is that many...

I wish that in instances like this, they could be given community service rather than a monetary fine. Especially with underage offenders, we know where the money is coming from with a fine.

Trail cleanup or rebuilding? Trash pickup in NF areas?

Re: East Barton Flats to Grinnell Ridge Camp

Thanks will do! I need to pick up a Tom Harrison for San Gorgonio. I have a general recreational map for the area but the topo on it sucks, it's non waterproof, and it only lists car campgrounds, not trail camps! How do you like your gatewood? I keep getting tempted to pick one up. Do you use a bivy...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over

One really neat thing I learned about poodle dog bush was that a few of the local beekeepers had their hives in and around the station fire burn areas. Turns out the flowers make for delicious honey. I talked with a beekeeper at the monrovia street fair about it. She had a few different honey variet...

oh the YMG closure for williamson rock is still there? That does kind of put a damper on that trek. I'll relook at the maps and everything, but perhaps I'll just do the gabrielino again.

Re: Gabrielino Trail: Red Box to Chantry Overnight

Thanks I appreciate the update on trail condition, I'm thinking of doing the gabrielino again in probably three weeks. Didn't want to deal with the amount of poodle dog I had the prior year. Might redo the route I did before, switzer to chantry. I really want to do the silver moccassin from vincent ...

Re: Gabrielino Trail: Red Box to Chantry Overnight

Very cool, I solo'd the gabrielino from switzer to chantry roughly one year ago. When I did it, there were some sections between red box and west fork that were hard to follow. Flags were there, but the path through the poodle dog bush sometimes disappeared. How was the poodle dog bush now? Is it in...

Idlehour/Mt Lowe Overnighter

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of going for a quick overnight up either Idlehour or Mt Lowe Trail Camps. I was curious if there were any rules about where to park and if there was any history of crime (ie: break-ins) for cars obviously left overnight down below. Could anyone chime in on that? Thanks!

Uh oh, shouldn't have probably started off as devil's advocate on here! The bottom line is that ...

Re: Mountain Lion Hunter May be Removed from Post

I'm guessing I am in the minority here, but I feel bad for the guy for the amount of flak he's getting. I'm not a hunter and the thought of shooting a big cat is pretty sad to me, but he flew out of state to a legal hunt. It seems a bit sad to oust a man from his position for doing nothing illegal.
