Water still running at Mt Lowe camp?

What is the nearest water source, presently, to Mt Lowe camp? I'm guessing Bear Canyon...but I'm not sure. I'm interested in going that way and would prefer to attain water instead of carry it.

Re: Anyone seen a bear while hiking in the Angeles Forest?

I 've seen bears twice: in camp hoegee just off of Santa Anita canyon. once I heard my small pile of pots clanging on the site's table. A bear had grabbed my nalgene bottle and then he dropped it halfway up the campground's slope side. I flashed my light at him and got my bottle, while he went up th...

arroyo seco canyon dead tree danger

I spent a night in Gould mesa campground and this morning I heard a tree fall, a few hundred yrds away. An hour or two later a second tree falls right in front of me. It was far enough to be safe but it was tall. It seems as though the station fire killed off many of the white bark trees in arroyo s...

Re: Gould Mesa swimmming hole

Was at Gould Mesa camp today and the swimming Hole which used to be four to five feet deep is now ankle deep due to sedimentary fill! oh how the mountains change in an instant sometimes.

Otherwise, good luck.

I imagine mountain bikers would be likely to slow down a lot at the sight of a stroller coming at them. Heh heh!

Re: month long food carry

On unstable trails I'd probably be better off pushing it and controlling the balance with the handlebars. I do see some issues arising like having to go up very rocky steep trail. I imagine having to drop my backpack a few dozen yards ahead and doubling back for the stroller. It is not an ideal solu...

Re: month long food carry

An idea just came up...what about a baby stroller the kind with knobby wheel for jogging? Yeah its going to be tricky in some trail areas but they're light tough and able to hold enough food for a month long trip inside a bag or pouch or spare backpack. I'd love to experiment with this idea. Now if ...

Gould Mesa swimmming hole

How has it stood up to the possible sedimentary flows since the station fire? Is it low due to dry season? I stayed at could mesa one summer for 2 weeks and fell in love with tha swimming hole. I want to go up with a crow bar and replace any large rocks to improve the depth of it.

Re: month long food carry

I should say traveling/ camping both are what I'll be doing. Lets say for example I want to circumnavigate the Williams fire boundary. I'll be doing a lot of walking and spending days at a time staying by my campsite.
Furthermore without food or water my pack weighs, 15lbs or so.

With both of these fires an unburned corridor between them was created. running roughly North and south. What can anyone say about the idea that this corridor will have a concentrated animal population?

Re: Info: Chantry flats - Spruce Grove Camp Loop

Oh yeah, as for keeping your stuff secure. I have had evidence that someone entered my unattended tent in the past. A friendly camp neighbor can keep an eye out. Its a crapshoot. Hide hour stuff or roll the dice and take the chance. But if you hide your stuff a squirrel might get your food...

As for water. If you use the Zion trail to get from spruce grove to hoegee's camp there's no water. You might find a muddy trickle but not much else.

Cool video, Cougarmagic. It would be naive to not be careful about your cameras. I'm sorry one got stolen. I realized that I subscribed to your videos on YouTube awhile ago. I hope you never lose another camera out there.

I hear about it being grown in Bear canyon, East Fork of Santa Anita canyon, little bear canyon, etc. Where don't they grow pot up there? ...rhetorical question. How do we protect ourselves from potentially deadly assaults from growers?

A good weight forward machete is Cold Steel magnum kukri machete. It has a broad tipped design and comes in 18 or 12" designs. Condor Knife and Tool also makes machetes with beefier blades than normal; and they're not too expensive, either.

The Poison Oak is easy, it's the dang dead stuff that's a pain! This machete will have more weight in the front to basically smash through dry...

Hoegee campground wildlife

In the last 3 years, I've spent some time at Hoegee's camp and at that place I've seen a bear, twice. I suspect it might've been the same bear both times based on its size and location. Once at night, and once in the middle of the day. The nighttime event happened because I heard the bear grab my Na...

Hello, this is my first post other my introductory post. I am a collector of knives and frequent a forum where we discuss them at length. I am very curious about the people here on this forum about what kind of blade(s) you might carry on a day hike or a long trip. And what is your rationale for you...

Re: INTROS - New members, introduce yourself here!

Hello I'm Rudy. I'm 41, this month! I love the San Gabriel mountains. I've been hiking these mountains since the 1970s. I go hiking and camping alone. I like camping in campgrounds and secret wild spots. The longest stretch I've spent in the mountains here was a month and a half. I never take water ...
