Re: Mount Wilson from middle Eaton Canyon

Earlier this year I dropped my bike helmet off Rim Trail in similar terrain. Spent about 30 minutes looking for it, and getting really sketched out. Not surprised re: the bee warning. The local bees are becoming more aggressive. I've been stung more times the past 3 years than I have my entire prece...

That's a very compact typewriter (Mr. Gotchy's). You could troll the Phillips Point people by posting photographs of their sign placed at the end of a random breakwater, like Marina Del Rey. Whole thing smacks of the Mt Thoreau/Mt George Davis kerfluffle. I've sworn off Bob Burd because of that. EDI...

It crossed CA-2 late last night. iMTBTrails - Fire Season thread - Scroll to the bottom for some good/heartening news. Web cams on Table show unburned pines, so...fast understory whipper again? (fingers'n'toes crossed for luck!)

GRIBBLENATION is a 'road history blog' I discovered when researching the El Portal->Foresta Road in west Yosemite. Start them young, before they realize what you're doing! I was 7 and my brother 5 when we did the Tuolumne->Happy Isles trip in Yosemite. Bear entered camp one night, parents each grabbed a corner of our tent, and we were rudely awakened by the dragging sensations as they ran from the bear up ...

Re: creeks with minnow fishing pools?

Probably wrong time of year. You might try Aliso (Zelzah) or Limekiln (Tampa). Those are 'park' and have good trail networks, cross the creeks a few times, always have frogs singing in the eve. West end of Vanowen, the 'south fork' of Bell Canyon, might have some. There are huge water tanks on the h...

Yes, Palm Springs. It's not like this anymore! :) Also, well worth the long drive out there. You're geology buff, so might be interested in the 'vertical aerial tour' it affords, very spectacular canyon on the way up.

Scene is from the Columbo episode Short Fuse, starring Roddy McDowall.

#3 could be Sulfur Springs CG, but could also be Kennedy Meadows area, or perhaps the mythical California Pines . This one should be easy, a classic, sorry not San Gabes is only clue. I was here probably the same year they filmed this. Very cliche adventure I had: we went for the snowplay, I decided...

I read a TR (bike-based) about this area, down Cherry Creek and up Tecuya Creek. Many bears were encountered, and a large desert tortoise. You got some great shots, really captures the variety of the area. Thanks!

I have no recollection of those markers, but Hogee's was our scout troop's (T28 Van Nuys) favorite weekend hike. I know I've seen markers like that before, can't place any, maybe someplace outside Yosemite? Sure beats fiberglass for durability and enviro friendliness.

Is it possible to decorate the resulting link, so it looks distinct from a normal URL? Syntax is easy to remember, so that's good.

Looks like you ended up on the Fish Tank Loop , so named because there is an old galvanized stock tank at the low point, filled from a reliable spring, and the tank is chock full of goldfish! I found this when I did a near identical route to yours, but exited the canyon earlier for my death scramble...

Beautiful country, thanks! I used to go up there a few times a year to climb/hike/ride/fish. Grumpy Bear is very good beef jerky, available only from the KM store or by mail. The junipers, while not rare, are not common. Pinyon is the predominant forest at the 6k-8k level in that area, with jeffrey ...

Foggy days up there are the best! Your focus shrinks to the tiny world around you, peaceful and muffled, colors all different, cooler greens. I saw some tiny parasol-like mushrooms up by Little Jimmy few days ago, dozens sprinkled on a shady slope: https://a4.pbase.com/o12/90/496890/1/174581599.6cQR...

Not I, but I read a report from MTB Bill, used the Alder Creek Trail as part of a route. IIRC, the ranch itself is still private, and doesn't look abandoned on the satellite views.

Great stuff, thanks! Quite a mischievous grin you've got there. I was just up to Islip on Sunday (5/19), and noticed it's the same 2 spots on that section of CA-2 that failed...again. Yeah, I thought that, too, when I saw the pic. It's the same spot. They spent a lot, did a lot of work, and it's broken again. Last time it was so bad, the only feasible bypass was to hoof it directly up-slope and meet the road above.
