Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

I know "somebody" who tried the hike to royal gorge last year from Gould Mesa. A lot of stream walking to end up about 1/4 mile shy of the gorge with a large, bushy tree blocking a narrow section. The limbs were too thin and springy to climb on and too thick to climb through. "They&qu...

Re: Water at Cedar Glen? (Icehouse Canyon area)

Still trickling as of this past Saturday. I think it was dry in late summer last year. Guessing it will be by this August too, but I'll try to remember to keep an eye out. Also, campground was surprisingly busy this weekend. 7 or 8 tents.

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

We opted for a pleasant stroll to Sunset Peak rather than fighting the crowds in Icehouse today, so this is complete speculation based on the view from miles away, but you are probably pretty safe. In general, the Mount Baldy area seemed to have patchy snow on shaded / north-facing slopes starting a...

Awesome! My girlfriend and I were there that morning scouting for a site for our engagement photos later that day. Saw the flowers and signs but didn't go up to echo mountain. Wish we had!

There should be. REI ran a snow travel class there this past saturday. They said there's plenty of snow and still expect conditions to be good for this Saturday's class (although it's full).

Re: this Sunday Hikes

I haven't been to Mt. Wilson since the storm, but you shouldn't run into much snow by Sunday I would think. As for bridge to nowhere, you can call the San Gabriel River Ranger district later this week. They will tell you the number and deepness of crossings from the most recent report they got from ...

Re: Injured hikers being removed from Mt. Baldy on stretchers

We were out hiking Sunset Peak on the 24th and saw that big LA county sheriff helicopter flying around over towards Baldy. Guess that explains why. Visibility was pretty spotty too.

Re: 2012 Basic Winter Mountaineering Clinic

I wouldnt count on it seeing as how Taco lives in Yosemite now. itd be a long commute to teach a clinic at Mt Baldy! Oh yeah... that's right. I bet you guys are having a blast up there! Well, if anyone heads out in the snow and ice this year and wants to teach a nube, lemme know. Otherwise, I guess...

Re: Hoegees/Spruce Grove Water Report?

There was plenty of water flowing just down the trail from Cedar Glen trail camp in icehouse canyon this past Saturday. And not a single person was camping. I think hiking Jim mentioned it once as a good place to camp, so I made a point of taking the Chapman trail back from the saddle. The trail cam...

True, I'll bring some purification tablets along to be safe. I wonder where the water line goes.

Potable Water? Blue Spigot in Castle Canyon

I was planning on hiking to inspiration point this weekend and was hoping not to carry a gallon of water. I went a few months ago and I remembered a water line that ran next to the trail in Castle Canyon. A little past echo mountain there is a spigot marked with a blue stripe. There was water the la...

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

i had a random friday off from work in May. I got to the trailhead at noon, and there were still only 9 or 10 cars in the parking lot. It was hot as hell on the way up, but that is a different story. I've never left a car there overnight, so i can't speak to that. Backpackers have their cars broken ...

Possible National Forest Re-Zoning

Anyone else see this? http://www.sgvtribune.com/ci_20667450/f ... ribune.com Don't know that much about it, but I think the re-zoning would probably mean you could still hike, but mountain biking and back country camping would be restricted. And dogs would have to be on a leash. There's a hearing on...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

We hiked up gabrielino to Paul Little and the debris dam last Saturday. I was curious if it might still be possible to get up to Oakwilde and then Royal Gorge. At Paul Little, its a little hard to tell where the Gabrielino trail was. I mean, you see where it should go up the ridge, but its not there...

2) Is that first picture San Antonio falls?

My name is Loren. I like hiking and photography, but don't do a lot of photography when i'm hiking. They're very different activities for me. I was born in Pasadena, moved around the country a little as a kid, live in Pasadena again. I go to the mountains pretty much every weekend. I'm usually hikin...

Re: East Fork River To Allison Gulch

Nice pics. I have to agree about the time of year. no bugs, no snakes, few people. Although, I took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather yesterday and went as far as the bridge to nowhere. 80 degrees makes those crossings really refreshing. Only bad part is the sun setting so early. We ran int...
