Re: Baldy Register Ridge 2-21-09

My brother and I went up the Register Route Saturday 3-7-09 and had a great time. As I said this was my first time up the route and found mixed conditions until 7,500 feet. Crampons were a must until we reached the Backbone were the snow had been blown clear. The temperatures stayed in the 20s most ...

Re: Baldy Register Ridge 2-21-09

Thanks! The resort has only reported 3-4 inches with light snow falling tonight however it is now 25 deg. and I am afraid of how bad the freeze thaw has been with it so warm this past week. But thanks again and I will report back tomorrow night.

Re: Baldy Register Ridge 2-21-09

I have been up Baldy from every side but the southeast ridge (Register Ridge) and I am looking forward to taking a crack at it this Saturday. I have moderate technical experience in the snow but I will be taking a noob with me. We both have crampons and axes harnesses and the like but I am not sure ...

Re: Baldy Register Ridge 2-21-09

Alan- My buddy and I were on the summit around 12:30 Saturday when a lone hiker came up from the Ridge Route. Was that you? I was disappointed that the snow was so soft but it was nice for glissading I think we glissaded more than 2/3rds of the way from summit to the road in about 1.2 hours. In fact...

Baldy this Saturday 2-21

February snowfall has been better than anyone could have ever imagined and I am dying to get out there ASAP. My plan is to head up to the ski hut and then head towards the summit starting from Manaker before 8AM. I have yet to summit this winter and I imagine there will be a nice trail blazed by som...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Awesome resource. Hopefully it will open the eyes of the less experienced climbers to the dangers during winter time. Sometime it is hard to believe that we have avyies in our mts. and it can happen to anyone. Thanks again.

Re: First time snowshoeing - Looking for suggestions

Glad to hear that you equipped yourself with a set of snowshoes but in order to get the best use of them you should work on getting a set of tire chains for your car. You will have greater access to better conditions the higher you can start. Not sure how great the snow coverage will be in the Villa...

Re: 02-07-09 Camaraderie on Old Greyback (a narrative)

Or more specifically they are called snow pickets. They are used as anchors while climbing more exposed slopes. As the hikers said, they would leave them home next time because in soft powder conditions they are nearly impossible to set securely. And ice axes are just about as pointless because if y...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

We were planning to head to the summit Sat. AM but decided to head downhill instead. The snow was just so deep and soft that even with MSR Denali snowshoes it was just too much. Now I wish we had but I was lacking the energy to push of for another 2-3 hours. There were 4-6 skiers who were coming up ...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

As planned I went up Baldy with a friend Friday evening. There was minimal snow at Manaker when we left but it started snowing HEAVILY on the way up the road and it never stopped! We camped on the ridge to the left of the bowl at 8,800 feet and it dumped at least 30" on us. The weather was horr...

Going up tomorrow evening (Friday) and coming down Sat. Not sure how far we will go up the ski hut trail. It all depends on how much falls in the next 24 hours. I will let you know what I find ASAP.

Went up baldy Wed. night and woke up to a white wonderland under warm blue skies. The snow was deep and soft; even with snowshoes! Although the seasons was late to start, it was worth the wait! See pictures below.

So far this year, neither of them has got it quite right. Michael has nailed two storms this fall three weeks before they made land fall. The first was in late October and the second was the one over Thanksgiving. While his estimates tend to be on the high side he does a good job and he looks out f...

I am blown away at how dry the bowl is! I was up there wed-thur and it was getting soft below the bowl but I would have thought some of it would have stuck around above 8,000ft. There was about 6" at 8,000 ft, 1' at 9,000 and 16-24" towards the summit. Melting snow always makes me sad. Thi...

well it did snow pretty good above the hut Wed-Thursday this week. It was falling as low as 7000 feet with over a foot at 9,000 feet. Just enough for me to break in my new snowshoes once I was across the bowl. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3 ... d=68602558 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?p...

Banning hunting wouldn't do anything to those who aren't hunting legally in the first place. BINGO. Criminals don't follow laws to begin with. We don't need anymore laws; we need more enforcement. Hunters are just as passionate about the outdoors as 'we' are. And I would know because I am an avid h...

Re: Fire above Baldy Village

It's a bummer is when nice trees get burned. Those don't come back quickly -- if they do come back. After the Santiago fire I was surprised to see that over half of the 100+ year old oaks survived the fire. And if you think about it all the big pines and such have survived a numerous fires in their...

No. In less than a year it will covered in new beautiful growth like no one has ever seen in years. Sad now. But the Santiago fire burned up to my back fence this past Nov. and the wildflowers this spring were out of control. The real bummer is the 12 or so months that the forest service will keep h...

Snowshoed up the ski hut trail last night with a friend. It took 5 hours to break trail to the ski hut where we camped for the night. It was 2-3 feet of soft stuff and the clear sky made it possible to do it by moon light. It was awesome! Our return trip was a totally different story. There was a sn...
