Great video, pictures and investigation.
The video also shows the diversity of plant life in the San Gabriel Mountains, from the burned off regrowth on the ridges to the lush trees in the narrow gullies.

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
I used to work with Kenny, AKA, Kenyon Devore he was a hydrographer for the old LA County Flood Control District. About as nice a person as you'ed ever want to know and when t came to the San Gabriel Mountains he had a wealth of knowledge.

Thank you for the response, you learn something new every day, especially after living in the canyon for almost ten years. During that time Morris was operated by the MWD, the Navy was still there and we seldom had reason to visit.

Re: Mt Bliss, AirWest 706 and Fish Canyon
Wikipedia says [the aqueduct] ends far to the East of there. Are there tunnels by the San Gabriels? I guess, technically, it's called a siphon. The terminal storage facility is Lake Mathews, then they send water through the San Gabriel foothills at an elevation of about 1000' in a series of deep tu...

Re: San Gabriel Dam Trail
Did you come across any large benchmarks cemented in corrugated pipe? No, but I wasn't looking for benchmarks. There are none listed on my maps. The 1940 topo shows a spot elevation along the ridge at 1758', but all the BMs near the reservoir are along the San Gabriel Canyon Road. Also, the firebre...

Did you come across any large benchmarks cemented in corrugated pipe? There used to be some special benchmarks around the dam to precisely measure movement of the dam. The trail may have been used to access the benchmarks.

What contrasts in New Mexico, from the totally desolate moonscapes around White Sands to the alpine valleys around Cloudcroft. We used to camp at Lake Bonita when we lived in Texas.dima wrote: Nice report! As an ex-New-Mexican, I always thought this area was in the wrong state by mistake.

Thanks for sharing! I always thought the highest peak in Texas would be on the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend area of West Texas. Emory peak is in the Chisos and reaches 7,825 feet.

Great post! I spent a couple of summers at Cogswell working for the old LA County Flood Control. Hats off for riding down the concrete section below the Cogswell camp area in the dark.

I found an ore cart wheel about one yards below the waterfall in Alison Gulch. It had a few chunks missing from it's travels downstream.

Gene, Those are some incredible photos of the Allison Mine. A lot of that stuff is long gone, so it's great to see what I missed. Would you consider allowing me to use your shot of the cabin in my website? That's a beauty. You would get credit for that photo of course. Here's a photo of an old wrec...

Re: Books and websites
Do you guys have any recommendations for a good visual guide (book or website) that shows and describes the flora and fauna of the San Gabriel Mountains? Re: Secret Tunnel Under The East Fork Road
There was a 'mine' of sorts in that side canyon at one time. The first contractor to remove silt from the San Gabriel Dam reservoir had a gold separation system on the conveyor system that moved material into the fill area. As I recall, there were at least two 15 or 20 foot deep test tunnels in the ...

Re: San Gabriel Reservoir Filled To Brim
Thats about 40,000 acre feet of water. Nice to see the pool that full. Not much room for another storm, but it's late for that. That might be why Morris dam levels are being kept low. San Gabriel dam is a flood control structure primarily, though it does feed water to a tunnel that feeds a power hou...

Re: Charging for rescues
There is always a "price" regardless of how it is paid, either by the individual rescued or by the general public. There is no such thing as government funds. An independent arbiter the rescue agency could consult if they see a particular rescue as out of the norm sounds like a good idea. ...

Good point, all of them until some sort of standard can be set. Just watch the sport of extreme skiing, essentially jumping off a now covered cliff. You want to do that, be my guest, just don't ask for public money to pay for your rescue and the treatment of your injuries. That's a valid observatio...

Some of those weeds are quite common. Some are also cultivated and widely planted in So Cal., e.g., African Daisy, fig trees and eucalyptus. With he exception of one of the thistle variations, I am pretty sure I've seen all of them at one time or another, especially in the foothills while working on...

It may be a straw man ploy to get funding:

Uh, he had 20,000 artifacts in his home? And he thinks it was the blog that got him in trouble? Some people absolutely cannot take responsibility for their own actions. What a dipshit. Re: POIs on Glendora Ridge
There is an abandoned cabin in lower Garcia canyon I think it was a girl scout camp. Thanks! I found the cabin on the 1939 topo. Then sometime later, but before 1966, the Garcia Road was built out to the point of the spur ridge. I tend to think it's unlikely that a road would have been built for th...
