Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
This reminds me of the fires in 1968/69 that preceded major flooding in 1969.

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
Apparently I took a pic of the sign too, which says flood control and water conservation. There’s a smattering of buildings nearby, for some purpose or other it is for flood control. There is an office and storage building at the dam and three homes for the dam operators along with some shops and c...

All mushrooms are edible, some only once.

Re: The Andrew Curtis Tungsten Mine
I know this will probably make me a pariah here, but I think it's bullshit that miners can drag all their crap into the canyons and then just leave it there when their claim has played out or it becomes inconvenient to remove it. In any other context, that would not be tolerated. It certainly would...

Buggy?
A truck bumper in Rockport, Texas. After moving to Bay City, Texas, less than two hours away from Rockport, I can never complain about bugs in other places.

Re: Scientists seek out limit to human endurance
I recall an article in a health/exercise magazine that Sumo wrestlers eat the most calories a day and competitive cyclists, e.g., Tour De France riders, were not far behind. "Average stages require between 4,000 and 6,000 kcal. Grueling mountain stages demand calorie burns of 7,000 kcal or more...

Re: Silver Fish Rd from Hwy39
Years ago I took that road to an old trail that dropped into Roberts Canyon. The trail was shown on older US Forest Service maps, but had disappeared long before so I bushwhacked down the slope into Robert's canyon. It took a lot longer than I thought it would and I lost about three years of life wh...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)
It is seldom seen because the road is typically closed, but there have been slides below the canyon road such that the road just ends in a drop off and a shear rock face. In those cases a bulldozer operator drives over the edge and "surfs" the nearly verticle slide to the bottom, sometime ...

Before the big plant was built there was only a small one for icing down fishing boats. My Father and some investors bought a closed ice plant in the US and moved it to La Paz. It was a very large construction job for the sleepy town. I still remember the tart smell curing concrete in the slab for t...

An epic ride! As for Camp Williams coffee, I've had it early in the morning from a pot that was made the night before and kept heated until morning. I prefer plain black coffee, but after a night of wading the East and West forks to measure the stream flow during a heavy rainstorm that included show...
