The manzanita is a beautiful plant. There are, (Were?), some epic examples along the beginning of the East Fort trail to Iron Mountain/Allision Gulch/Widman Ranch trail.

Wow, I hope he recovers.
As is so often said here, there has to be more to this story. With the canyon geography of the San Gabriels, there are not too many places it is difficult to find your way. Thanks for sharing the story.

WTF...if you're smart enough to build a dam, you are smart enough to know that sediment builds up behind every single god damn dam in the world. Ask any beaver and he'll tell ya so. If someone builds a dam and doesn't think of sediment removal then expect that dam to fail 'cause that guy's an idiot...

Re: Backpack Tax
Let me be clear: taxation is theft. That said, whoever came up with this idea likely reviewed how the shooting, fishing, and hunting sports are (heavily) taxed to support wildlife, habitat, protection, and management. In most cases, the entire costs are paid directly from taxes on these activities a...

When I was a little guy we lived in La Paz, Mexico, my Father built the ice plant there. Anyway, we were driving over to the Pacific side to Todo Santos and had a flat tire. My sister, who is older, and another kid her age, were playing while my Father changed the tire . I was running up a little hi...

The small concrete building at 0:09 in the video is a stilling well for measuring the river flow. At 0:15 the cable car is used to measure river flows above 1,000 cubic feet per second. Many years ago I spent some wet hours in that car cranking up and down on a 75 or 100 pound torpedo weight with a ...

Makes me curious as to when they changed the name from Rattlesnake Trail to Kenyon Devore Trail. I think it was in the late '90s after the trail's namesake had passed away? Nice profile of the gentleman for whom the trail was renamed while he was still among the living: https://www.latimes.com/arch...
