Re: Fire in SG East Fork
I don't think this is related to this fire, but this is a small fire I observed just east of Iron Mt. from the PCT on my way to Baden-Powell on Saturday. I saw air tankers do multiple drops of red fire retardant in an attempt to contain this fire. I haven't seen any reports on this fire. https://ei...

Re: the 'Guess the Photo' thread
Hmmm... Garcia Canyon? Ding Ding Ding, for extra points what structure is close by? The San Gabriel Dam is just upstream and the pipe leading to the penstocks at the canyon mouth are on the east slope somewhere at the base of your photo. The dam is up canyon to the right and on the other side of a ...

Re: Man Kills Cougar With A Frying Pan
This is an old-ish article (2009) but it's interesting. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... ution.html That is disturbing, especially this, "not just through biting and scratching but through simple socializing, as humans might spread a flu." The public health doctor that gave a c...

Re: Man Kills Cougar With A Frying Pan
Arizona seems to have a lot of rabies incidents (relatively). I wonder why that is. It's pretty much non-existent in LA county. In cougars or all animals? It's been a number of years ago, but I gad an experience with a rabid bat. The public heath doctor said it was quite common in bat colonies. ...

Re: your choice of knife for your trip...what and why?
I carry a Spyderco yellow Tasman. The N1 steel is impervious to rust even in salt water. N1 is a little soft, but work hardens as it is sharpened and used. It's also quite easy to sharpen. I used to think Spyderco knives looked odd, but then I handled one. They have great ergos and a fantastic selec...

Re: Lone Wolf now in CA!
That lone wolf may meet some coyotes and establish a pack of hybrids. It has already happened on the East coast. Here in South Carolina we see what looks, acts and moves like a coyote but is a much larger animal than the coyotes I was used to seeing in the San Gabriels. A National Geographic story o...
